About College

The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) is India’s premier public business school located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. It was founded in 1961 as part of Prime Minister Nehru’s Five Year Plans. IIM-A’s founding director was Ravi Matthai. Other notable founding members include physicist Vikram Sarabhai and entrepreneur Kasturbhai Lalbhai.

IIM-A offers Master Degree programmes in agribusiness and management, a couple of Executive Post-Graduate programmes, a doctoral programme and a number of executive training programmes. The institution was originally founded as a society and till the implementation of the Indian Institutes of Management Act 2017, the institute’s Post-Graduate programmes were not given the same stature as that of a Master’s degree.

As of 2019, IIM Ahmedabad is chaired by the billionaire industrialist and chairman of the Birla Group, Kumar Mangalam Birla. Director Errol D’Souza manages the day to day management. Among its ranks of faculty members, IIM-A counts prominent educators such as Professor Sebastian Morris who teaches Management Ethics, Professor Ajay Pandey who takes both the Philosophy Foundation and Economics classes and Professor Saral Mukherjee of Operations Strategy.

IIM Ahmedabad was ranked 16th on a worldwide scale by the Financial Times in 2016. The QS Global MBA Rankings 2018 has ranked the institution 49 on a global basis and 7th in the Asia Pacific region. As of 2019, it has been ranked first in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework, Business Today and Outlook India on their respective lists.

IIM Ahmedabad Courses and Fee structure

IIM Ahmedabad is a paragon of excellence among management schools in India. The institution currently offers Masters’ Degrees in management as per the approved guidelines of the Indian Institutes of Management Bill, 2017. The courses include two-year long full programmes (PG programmes), one-year residential programmes for practising professionals (PGPX) and ePost Graduate Programmes (ePGP). Other courses include a full-time doctoral fellowship programme. IIM-A also provides a range of faculty development and executive education programmes.

IIM Ahmedabad Course highlights

  • IIM Ahmedabad’s flagship programme is Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), which is also considered as the toughest MBA course in the world to get admission.
  • Apart from PGP, IIM-A also offers Post Graduate Program in Food and Agri-Business Management (PGP-FABM), which aims to create professional managers for businesses related to food and agriculture.
  • IIM-A also offers a course for executives called Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX). It is a full-time residential one-year programme.
  • Working professionals may also opt for ePost Graduate Programme (ePGP), which is offered through an interactive technology platform. It is a two year course with flexibility of being completed in three years.
  • On doctoral level, IIM-A offers Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) that deals with research on complex issues in specialized fields.
  • With an aim to better prepare faculty members for management institutes, IIM-A also runs a Faculty Development Programme (FDP). It is a residential programme.
  • IIM-A offers a six-month programme for Armed forces. Called the Armed Forces Programme (AFP), it aims to provide them a smooth second career transition into the global corporate world.

IIM Ahmedabad Admission Process

Being the premier business school in India and one of the elite schools in Asia, IIM Ahmedabad conducts a long, arduous and stringent admission process. Each of the five flagship courses offered by the institution has specific admission criteria. The application form can be found on IIM-A’s official website (https://www.iima.ac.in).

IIM Ahmedabad Admission Highlights

  • The PG Programme in Management candidates are selected on the basis of their CAT (domestic) or GMAT (foreign) score and should they clear the cutoff, they would have to pass the Academic Writing Test (AWT) and a personal interview round.
  • Domestic applicants for the PGP FABM programme would have to clear the CAT cutoff followed by a round of group discussions and a personal interview. For international applicants, the entrance test to be cleared is GMAT.
  • The Executive PG Programme requires the candidate to have a valid score in GMAT or GRE which is followed by an essay writing test and an interview.
  • The doctoral fellowship requires the candidate to have a valid score in one of the following tests: CAT, GMAT, UGC JRF, GATE or GRE which is followed by an essay writing test and an interview.
  • For the EPG Programme, the candidate has to sit for either CAT (domestic), GMAT (international) or the IIM-A Admission Test (both). Should they clear the cutoff, they would be called in for an interview.

PG Programme in Management (PGP)

Eligibility:

The candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree in Agricultural Sciences or any other agricultural-related disciplines with a minimum of 50% marks (45% marks for SC/ST & DA).

Selection Process:

The candidate must have a  valid score in CAT which followed by a group discussion and a PI round conducted by IIM-A.

Post Graduate Programme in Food and Agri-Business Management (PGP-FABM)

Eligibility:

The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 50% average along with at least four years of work experience.

Selection Process:

The candidate is selected on the basis of their valid score in GMAT or GRE followed by an essay submission and an interview which are both conducted by IIM-A.

Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX)

Eligibility:

The candidate must have at least four years of previous work experience. They must be at least 25 years with at least 15 years of education under their belt.

Selection Process: 

The candidate is selected on the basis of their valid score in GMAT or GRE followed by an essay submission and an interview which are both conducted by IIM-A.

ePost Graduate Programme (ePGP)

Eligibility: 

The candidate must be at least 24 years old at the time of application. They must hold a Bachelors’ Degree and have previous 3 years of work experience.

Selection Process: 

The candidate must have a  valid score in CAT which followed by a group discussion and a PI round conducted by IIM-A.

Fellowship Programme in Management (FPM)

Eligibility: 

  • A Master's Degree or a five-year Integrated Master’s Degree in any discipline, with at least 55 % marks in the Bachelor’s as well in the Master’s degrees.
  • A professional qualification like CA, ICWA, CS, with at least 50% marks.
  • A 4 year Bachelor's degree with at least 60% marks.

Selection Process:

The selection of candidates to IIM-A is made on the basis of their performance in either of the following: CAT, GATE, GMAT, GRE and UGC JRF. This is followed by personal interview rounds.

Faculty Development Programme (FDP) 

Eligibility:

Candidates must have post-graduate level teaching experience in management and research worth at least two years. Preference will be given to candidates who are less than 45 years old. Any past experience of teaching or research at an early age would be beneficial. 

Selection Process:

The candidates are shortlisted for admission based on the strength of their profile.

Armed Forces Programme

Eligibility:

The candidate must have been a member of the armed forces.

Selection Process: 

The student selection is overseen by the unit of the forces that the candidate belongs to, IIM does not have any influence over the process.

IIM Ahmedabad Placement

The placement process practised by IIM Ahmedabad is a student-oriented process that aims to guarantee placements for the entire batch. The placement for the graduating batch is conducted by two levels. The first step sees the placement cell process where and firms interview students with prior work experience for mid-level managerial positions. The final step sees companies from multiple sectors hire candidates.

IIM Ahmedabad Results and cut-off

As India’s premier management school, IIM-A holds a very high level of expectation from its applicants. Each year, nearly 100,000 students sit for the Common Admission Test with the hopes of clearing the exam and getting into the hallowed institution. IIM-A selects only the cream of the crop. As a result, the IIM-A cutoff for General candidates is almost ridiculously high. It is to be noted that IIM-A issues sectional as well as overall cutoff percentiles and requires the candidates to clear both.

IIM Ahmedabad CAT Cutoff 2018 Highlights

  • The overall cutoff percentile for the Other Backward Classes category was 75 percentile.
  • For the General category applicants, the minimum cutoff percentile was 80.

IIM Ahmedabad Alumni Association

The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad boasts one of the most ambitious and influential alumni networks in India. IIM Ahmedabad Scholarship

IIM Ahmedabad provides scholarships to meritorious students with more than 7.5 grade points in their first results. These scholarships are not rebates on tuition fees, however. Instead, these scholarships are interest waivers on the loans availed by the students at the time of admission. The maximum amount offered by the scholarship programme is INR 3 lakhs. IIM-A has also partnered with the Central Bank, the State Bank of India and Axis Bank to provide subsidised interest rates on loans availed by IIM-A candidates.

IIM Ahmedabad Campus

The IIM-A campus lies sprawled across 102 acres in Vastrapur, Ahmedabad. The campus consists of academic blocks, administrative offices, student and faculty accommodation, a library complex, an auditorium, the Louis Kahn Plaza, two management development centres, the Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship, sports and recreation facilities, multiple eateries and food outlets along with merchandise stores.
