What is GMAT?

The GMAT entrance exam assesses candidates’ analytical abilities in quantitative and verbal reasoning sections. While GMAT is primarily for MBA admissions, preparation related to management is not required. GMAT evaluates fundamental mathematical and verbal skills essential for success in B-School academics. Therefore, students without a management background need not worry about GMAT preparation. The exam is designed to test logical skills, making it accessible to a broad range of applicants.

GMAT Full Form

GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admission Test, necessary for admission to MBA and other postgraduate business programs abroad. Administered by GMAC in over 100 countries, applicants can register throughout the year and choose exam dates based on availability at GMAT test centers.

What’s New with the GMAT Exam?

GMAC has introduced the GMAT Focus Edition as the latest iteration of the GMAT exam, featuring several notable changes compared to its predecessor:

  • The GMAT Focus Edition is 52 minutes shorter than the previous GMAT exam.
  • The number of questions has been reduced from 80 to 64 in the GMAT Focus Edition.
  • The Integrated Reasoning section and essay writing component have been reduced in the GMAT Focus Edition.
  • A new section called Data Insights has been introduced, replacing the Integrated Reasoning section from the previous version.

These updates aim to streamline the exam while ensuring it remains relevant to current academic and industry standards.

GMAT Exam Dates 2026

The GMAT exam offers flexibility in choosing test dates, allowing candidates to schedule their exam according to their readiness, MBA or MIM application deadlines, and study abroad timelines. Since GMAT exams are conducted throughout the year, candidates have the freedom to select a date that suits them best. It is advisable to secure your GMAT 2026 exam date by booking it at least 2-3 months in advance through the official website.

How to Schedule a GMAT 2026 Slot?

This also means that you get to decide when to begin preparing for the GMAT so that you have adequate time for preparation. It is advisable to register for the GMAT exam at least two months before your desired exam date. First, find the GMAT exam dates for 2026 and check the availability on your preferred date.

Follow these steps to book your GMAT slot:

Step 1: Visit the official GMAT website.
Step 2: Choose your preferred test centre.
Step 3: Select your country of preference.
Step 4: Choose a GMAT test centre from the list provided (you can select up to three test centres).
Step 5: Select your preferred GMAT exam date.

When selecting their GMAT exam date for 2026, students should take into account the following considerations:

  1. University/College Application Deadlines: It is highly recommended that students thoroughly research study abroad intake periods and various university deadlines.

  2. GMAT Exam Preparation: When choosing a GMAT exam date, it is crucial to assess your current level of GMAT preparation. Typically, students require 4-6 months on average to adequately prepare for the exam.

  3. Application Documents: Applying for an MBA abroad involves more than just obtaining a GMAT score. Prepare other essential application documents such as resumes, letters of recommendation (LOR), statement of purpose (SOP), admission essays, etc. Ensure you allocate sufficient time for these tasks before finalising your GMAT exam date.

  4. GMAT Retake: If your initial GMAT score falls short of your expectations, you may need to retake the exam. Factor in additional time for potential retakes when selecting your GMAT exam date.

When scheduling your GMAT exam for 2026, you have the option to select either a morning or afternoon slot, though availability can vary between attempts. It’s recommended to begin checking dates well in advance, as availability depends on the GMAT test centers.

What does GMAT mean?

GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admission Test, and it is a requirement for MBA admissions in foreign countries. The test is designed to evaluate candidates’ analytical abilities in the quantitative and verbal reasoning sections. Despite being intended for MBA admissions, students do not need to study management-related subjects for the GMAT exam. Instead, the exam assesses the fundamental mathematical and verbal skills needed to succeed in B-School academics. Therefore, students who do not have a background in management should not be concerned about their GMAT preparation.

What is the reason to take the GMAT Exam?

The GMAT Exam is widely recognised and accepted by universities around the world for MBA admissions. According to the GMAC, 9 out of 10 MBA enrollments globally are made using GMAT scores, and over 2,300 schools accept GMAT scores for admission. The exam can be taken at one of the 650 testing centers located in 114 countries.

GMAT Exam Pattern 2026

The latest GMAT exam features a completely new pattern. The GMAT Focus Edition format is straightforward and clearly outlined by GMAC. The GMAT Focus Edition exam paper consists of three sections, with a total duration of 2 hours and 15 minutes. The GMAT Focus follows the exam pattern detailed below:

GMAT Focus Edition Sections

Total Number of Questions Tested

Time Allocated

Quantitative Reasoning

21 Questions

45 minutes

Verbal Reasoning

23 Questions

45 minutes

Data Insights

20 Questions

45 minutes

The GMAT Focus Edition consists of a total of 64 multiple-choice questions, all equally weighted. There is no writing or essay section in this edition. Additionally, candidates have the option to take two eight-minute breaks during the exam.

GMAT Syllabus 2026

The GMAT Focus Edition syllabus assesses candidates’ abilities across various parameters and comprises three sections:

  • Quantitative Aptitude: This section includes Arithmetic and Algebraic Math questions.
  • Verbal Reasoning: This section features Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension questions.
  • Data Insights: This section tests data analysis skills.

With the introduction of the GMAT Focus Edition, there has been a reduction in both the overall duration and the number of questions, eliminating one entire section. Now, applicants face fewer questions that require logical reasoning and application of rules.

GMAT Score 2026

Applicants are scored on a scale of 205 to 805 on the GMAT Focus Edition. Each of the three sections—Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights—is scored equally, with each section ranging from 60 to 90. The updated score range helps schools and applicants distinguish between GMAT Focus Edition scores and previous GMAT scores. Overall, candidates can achieve a total score between 205 and 605 in the latest GMAT exam. The complete GMAT Score Report is released to candidates by GMAC.

GMAT Focus Edition Score Report

The GMAT Focus Edition score report provides a detailed overview of an applicant’s performance. It includes the following four elements:

  • Quantitative Score: 6 – 51, with percentile
  • Verbal Score: 6 – 51, with percentile
  • Data Insights Score: 6 – 51, with percentile
  • Total GMAT Focus Edition Score: 205 – 805, with percentile

Candidates who take the GMAT Focus Edition will receive a score report featuring these parameters, along with a performance review.

GMAT Focus Edition Results 2026

The results for the GMAT Focus Edition will be available within 3 to 5 days on the applicant’s mba.com account after the exam date. Applicants will need to send their five free GMAT Focus Edition score reports within 48 hours of the score release. There is no need for applicants to cancel their GMAT Focus Edition scores, as they can manually select the B-schools to send their scores to after they are released by GMAC.

GMAT Preparation 2026

To study effectively on your own for the GMAT, you’ll need a few good books and resources, along with study materials, motivation, and self-discipline. However, if time is limited and you feel the need for professional guidance to gain a competitive edge, joining a GMAT coaching center in your area may be the better option.

GMAT Sectional Preparation Tips 2026

Here are targeted preparation tips for each section of the GMAT Focus Edition:

  • Quantitative Section: This section assesses candidates’ basic mathematical skills. Practice is crucial to excel here.

  • Verbal Section: The Verbal section evaluates candidates’ ability to comprehend written material. Strong reading skills and command of the language are essential.

  • Data Insights: This section focuses on data understanding and precise analysis. Practice with various types of data sets is key.

In summary, extensive practice is vital for achieving a high score on the GMAT Focus Edition.

GMAT Question Papers 2026

GMAT question papers are indispensable for effective GMAT preparation. For beginners, we provide Graduate Management Aptitude Test questions categorised by section. It’s important for students to participate in GMAT mock tests as these help identify mistakes and refine their preparation for the GMAT 2026 exam. Underestimating the value of GMAT mock tests is strongly discouraged, as they play a critical role in thorough GMAT exam readiness.

GMAT Online vs Test Centre

There are two modes of GMAT exam. One is GMAT online, which can be taken from home and the other is at GMAT exam at centre. Both of them are available while registering. GMAT Online and GMAT at test centre share common points of exam structure, eligibility and scoring. Difference lies in their dates, mode of conduction and fees.

Difference Between GMAT at Test Centre and GMAT Online

Here are some of the key differences between GMAT Online and GMAT at a Test Centre:

Parameters GMAT Exam at Test Centre GMAT Exam at Home or Online
GMAT Dates Availability 7 days a week, but at different time slots, which are also limited.  7 days a week, at all times of the day (that is, 24×7)

Cost of GMAT in India

USD 275 USD 300
Rough Work Resources

At the GMAT test centre, five laminated pages and two dry-erase markers are provided.

For home testing of GMAT, a physical whiteboard, dry-erase marker and eraser are permitted. Additionally, there is also access to a whiteboard online.

Based on this comparison, applicants can choose their preferred mode for taking GMAT exam. Mind it that dates will be available but slots may run out soon at a test centre. So the applicants must apply accordingly. On the contrary, there are no restrictions for GMAT Online testing.

GMAT Test Centres in India 2026

Before booking your GMAT exam, it is important to locate a GMAT Focus test centre that is close to your residence and easily accessible. Choosing a nearby centre ensures that you can reach the venue comfortably and on time on the test day.

The GMAT is conducted only at authorised Pearson VUE test centres worldwide. In India, there are approximately 40 GMAT test centres available for candidates.

These centres are spread across major Indian cities, including New Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Cochin, Pune, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata, among others. Candidates can select their preferred centre based on convenience and seat availability while registering.

GMAT Scholarship 2026

For pursuing an MBA program, business schools typically offer scholarships and grants, which can be need-based or merit-based. However, there is no fixed criteria for granting a GMAT scholarship in 2026, as each school has its own admission process. Candidates should always confirm with the school for scholarship opportunities. Full and partial scholarships are the two types of scholarships offered, where the former covers the entire cost of the program, and the latter covers only a portion of the course fee.
