The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and University Grants Commission (UGC) approved Punjab University is a public state university situated in Chandigarh, India. With 188 affiliated colleges and 78 teaching and research departments, Punjab University Chandigarh is one of the most highly ranked universities in India.

Punjab University ranking is 21 among universities in India under the NIRF rankings of 2019. Undergraduate courses

The 3-year long Bachelor of Science full-time course consists of specializations like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Microbial and Food Technology, Biotechnology, Non-Medical, Computer Science, Microbiology, Biotechnology & Bioinformatics, Fashion and Lifestyle Technology, Zoology, Medical, Fashion Designing, Agriculture, Botany, Industrial Microbiology, Geology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics etc.

PhD courses

The University offers a Doctor of Philosophy degree in specializations like Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering etc over a period of two years. Apart from that, Punjab University distance education courses are also offered in various disciplines of study. 

Admission Process

All the applicants are admitted to the university courses based on the marks scored in the qualifying exam. Candidates need to score above a specified mark in these exams to get admitted to a particular class or discipline. The qualifying exams include JEE Mains (Joint Entrance Exam), CET-PG (Panjab University Postgraduate Common Entrance Test), MET (Panjab University Management Entrance Test), NEET MDS (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for MDS), PUTHAT (Panjab University Tourism & Hospitality Aptitude Test) etc. Shortlisted candidates need to sit for a personal interview and group discussion round. The final selection of candidates is made based on the qualifying exam score plus the performance in the personal interview or group discussion round.

Results and Cut-off

Punjab University colleges announce the cut-off list of its various courses and disciplines once the results of the corresponding entrance tests are out. Punjab University result and cut-off list are prepared based on several factors like the number of candidates appearing for the qualifying exam, the highest marks obtained in the examination, the level of difficulty of the test and the number of vacant seats available in a particular department of the University.

The University declares following cut off lists until all the places in the affiliated colleges are filled up by candidates. The candidates need to obtain a score, which is equal to or more than the cut-off mark specified by the University to get admitted to their desired courses.

For example, B.E candidates are required to surpass the JEE Mains or PULEET cut-off score, PG candidates are needed to cross the CET-PG cut-offs, MBA candidates need to cross the MET cut-offs and LLB aspirants need to surpass the PU UGLAW cut-offs.

The Library at Punjab University holds a rich collection of over 5000 online full-text journals which can be availed by readers through UGC-INFONET and INDEST-Consortium. Punjab University hostels are provided to both boys and girls.

There are 18 hostel buildings out of which 8 are for boys, 9 are for girls and one is a Working Women Hostel. The basic amenities offered to the residents include wifi facility, dining hall and canteen, water coolers, a visitors' lounge etc.

The hostel facilities vary according to colleges. The University campus also has Badminton Courts, a Cricket Ground, Football Ground, Swimming Pool, Tennis Court, Hockey Ground, Volleyball Court, Kabaddi Court, Shooting Range, Weight Lifting, Judo and Wrestling Court.
