GMAT 2023 Exam Information

The GMAT, or Graduate Management Admission Test, evaluates candidates’ abilities in analytical writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in standard written English using a computer-adaptive format. The test fee is $275  for test center exam and $300 for online exam. It is commonly taken for admission to graduate management programs, such as MBA and Masters in Finance programs at top business schools worldwide. This exam is considered the top choice for admission to business school. This article provides comprehensive information on GMAT eligibility, registration, exam pattern, and more. According to GMAC, nine out of ten new MBA enrollments occur with a GMAT score.

The registration for the new GMAT Exam- Focus Edition has opened on August 29, 2023, and testing is scheduled to begin on November 7, 2023. Starting February 1, 2024, the only version of the GMAT available for business school candidates to take will be the updated GMAT Focus Edition following the sunset of the previous GMAT Exam on January 31, 2024. GMAC intends to cater to the evolving demands of the business world with a greater emphasis on critical reasoning and data literacy through the launch of the GMAT Focus Edition. The Latest Update section of this page will provide you with up-to-date information on the GMAT Focus Edition.

Since April 16, 2018, the Graduate Management Admission Council has shortened the GMAT exam by 30 minutes. The GMAT exam now takes 3 hours and 30 minutes, including test instructions and breaks. The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative sections have been reduced by 13 and 10 minutes, respectively. The Integrated Reasoning and Analytical Writing Assessment, along with the Score Preview and optional break time, remained the same. The GMAC has removed only the unscored items, and these changes do not affect the scoring in the shortened Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative sections. GMAT allows candidates to customize their exam experience by choosing the section order in which they are most comfortable taking the test. According to GMAC, nine out of ten new enrolments use a GMAT score.

GMAT Online Exam

  • The GMAC has introduced the GMAT Online Exam, which allows candidates to take the GMAT from their home instead of going to a test center. This option was added due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Candidates can choose between taking the GMAT Online Exam or taking the exam at a test center near them.
  • With the GMAT Online Exam, candidates can schedule an exam appointment up to 24 hours before an available testing slot. New appointments for the GMAT Online Exam are continuously available.
  • The GMAT Online Exam attempts count towards a candidate’s 5 GMAT exam attempts on a rolling 12-month basis and 8-lifetime attempts.
  • The fees for the GMAT exam is $300.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the suspension of test-center based GMAT exams, prompting the release of the GMAT Online on April 15th, 2020, as an alternative for candidates who want to take the GMAT from home. As a result, some top business schools are no longer requiring GMAT scores and may even waive application fees, while universities are extending their admission deadlines to accommodate more applicants.

The latest updates on the GMAT Online test include the removal of the limit on the number of times a candidate can take the exam online, with attempts counting towards the overall limits of 5 attempts in a rolling 12-month period and 8 lifetime attempts. The GMAT Online exam also includes 5 free score reports, which must be used within 48 hours of receiving the official online exam score. Additional score reports can be purchased for US$35 each.

GMAC, the administrator of the GMAT, has announced that Indian students can now use their Aadhaar Card as valid ID proof for the GMAT Online exam, starting from April 8th, 2021. However, candidates must validate their identity using their Aadhaar Card or Passport during the registration process. This initiative aims to make the GMAT 2023 more accessible to a larger student base. It’s worth noting that Aadhaar Card is only accepted as valid ID proof for the online format of the GMAT test, while GMAT test centers will only accept a valid passport as ID proof.

What does GMAT mean?

GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admission Test, and it is a requirement for MBA admissions in foreign countries. The test is designed to evaluate candidates’ analytical abilities in the quantitative and verbal reasoning sections. Despite being intended for MBA admissions, students do not need to study management-related subjects for the GMAT exam. Instead, the exam assesses the fundamental mathematical and verbal skills needed to succeed in B-School academics. Therefore, students who do not have a background in management should not be concerned about their GMAT preparation.

What is the reason to take the GMAT Exam?

The GMAT Exam is widely recognized and accepted by universities around the world for MBA admissions. According to the GMAC, 9 out of 10 MBA enrollments globally are made using GMAT scores, and over 2,300 schools accept GMAT scores for admission. The exam can be taken at one of the 650 testing centers located in 114 countries.

GMAT Exam Dates 2023

There is no fixed official date for the GMAT exam in 2023, as candidates can choose any date based on their convenience and availability. If you need to retake the exam, you can do so after 16 days, and there is a maximum limit of five attempts per year. Ideally, candidates should register themselves two to three months prior to the exam date. While you can register online or by phone up to 24 hours before the exam, it is recommended to register early to have a set schedule for exam preparation. Coaching institutes also advise early registration for a wider window of preparation time.

Before selecting a GMAT exam date, there are a few factors to consider, including:

Application deadlines and study abroad intakes: It’s important to know the application deadlines and intake dates for MBA programs or study abroad programs you are interested in. This will help you determine how much time you need to prepare your application.

Preparation time: After knowing the deadlines and time required for documentation, you can determine the amount of time you need to prepare for the GMAT. Typically, students spend 3-6 months preparing for the exam.

Country preferences: Deadlines, intakes, GMAT cutoffs, and required documents may differ between countries and universities. It is important to be aware of these variations.

GMAT Syllabus

The GMAT is a standardized test that assesses a candidate’s abilities across different parameters and lasts for three and a half hours, with a maximum score of 800 points. The syllabus for the GMAT consists of four sections:

  1. Analytical Writing Assessment: This section measures a candidate’s ability to think critically and effectively communicate their ideas.

  2. Integrated Reasoning: This section evaluates a candidate’s ability to analyze data and interpret information presented in various formats.

  3. Quantitative Reasoning: This section measures a candidate’s capacity to draw conclusions using reasoning skills and analyze data.

  4. Verbal Reasoning: This section assesses a candidate’s ability to comprehend written material, evaluate arguments, and conform written material to standard written English.

GMAT Score 2023

To obtain a clear picture of their performance, candidates need to comprehend their GMAT score and the GMAT score report. Additionally, candidates must be familiar with various facets of GMAT scores.

Your official GMAT score report includes five scores: one for each of the four sections and a total score. These scores are reported on a fixed scale and are the only scores that appear on your report and are sent to the schools you have chosen. It’s important to note that the total score report only includes the verbal and quantitative scores and does not take into account any other section of the exam.

The elements included in the GMAT Score Report are:

  • Quantitative Score (6 – 51), along with percentile
  • Verbal Score (6 – 51), along with percentile
  • Total GMAT Score (200 – 800), along with percentile
  • AWA Score (half-integers from 0 to 6), along with percentile
  • Integrated Reasoning score (integer from 1 to 8)

GMAT test-takers can view their unofficial scores immediately after completing the exam, with the exception of the AWA Score. At this point, candidates have the option to accept or reject their scores. If the candidate accepts the result, the scores will be available to both the candidate and the designated institutions. However, if the candidate rejects the result, no party will have access to the GMAT scores. Within 20 days of taking the exam, candidates will receive their official GMAT Score Report, which includes the AWA Score.

GMAT Scholarship 2023

For pursuing an MBA program, business schools typically offer scholarships and grants, which can be need-based or merit-based. However, there is no fixed criteria for granting a GMAT scholarship in 2023, as each school has its own admission process. Candidates should always confirm with the school for scholarship opportunities. Full and partial scholarships are the two types of scholarships offered, where the former covers the entire cost of the program, and the latter covers only a portion of the course fee.
