About College

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is government co-educational institute was established in the year 1960. It is awarded as an “Institute of National Importance” in 1961 by the parliament of India. College is affiliated as a Central University and administered by IIT council, established by the government of India. The college has approved by AICTE- All India Council of Technical Education, New Delhi, Govt. of India and MHRD- Ministry of Human Resource and Development, New Delhi. IIT, Kanpur facilitates high-class education in engineering and management programs.

IIT Kanpur Admissions to B.Tech, B.S, and dual degree courses are offered through JEE Advanced, and for M.Sc programs admission is offered through JAM. A valid GATE score is required for admission to the M.Tech./ MS program and for M.Des. Course it is offered by the CEED score.

IITK has a sprawling campus of 1055 acres and has 108 buildings. There are nearly 415 faculty members and 7500 students in IITK, and nearly all students live on campus.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is situated on GT Road at Kalyanpur in Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. It locates 16 km west of city and well-connected by roads. The campus is spread over an area of 1055 acres of land.

Admission Procedure:

B. Tech. And B.S. Programmes:

  • Admission to these programmes is made through Joint Entrance Examination-Main (JEE-Main), and Joint Entrance Examination-Advanced (JEE- Advanced) conducted on an All India level in April and May by CBSE and IITs respectively.
  • The minimum academic qualification for appearing in JEE is a pass in the final examination of 10+2 system or its equivalent.

M. Sc. (2-year) and M. Sc. – Ph. D. (Dual Degree) Programmes:

  • Admission is made an All India level examination known as ‘Joint Admission Test for M. Sc. (JAM)’. The underlying philosophy of JAM seeks to provide a single unified national level test for admission to different post-B. Sc. programmes offered at respective IITs, to synergise the admission procedures for M. Sc. programmes in all IITs and thereby ensure a qualitative difference in the students admitted on a wider basis.

IIT Kanpur, one of the premier institutes of India, the placement cell of the institute is managed by a team of experts. Institute trained their learners through guest lecture, mock interviews, group discussion and brainstorming session. Institute invites top-notch firms in its campus for the recruitment process and for the summer internship.

The Students' Placement Office (SPO) is run and managed by an efficient team of office staff & students. All aspects of placements at IIT Kanpur are handled by the SPO. The team at SPO is involved in everything right from contacting companies to managing all logistics of arranging for tests, pre-placement talks and conducting final interviews. The hospitality and the functioning of SPO is applauded and well received by the visiting recruiters every year.

Infrastructure and Facilities

IIT Kanpur campus is well equipped with high-tech labs & classrooms, an ample number of sports facilities and loads of entertainment options. The campus has all the equipment and facilities that are required for imparting knowledge and overall growth of students. IIT Kanpur has a vibrant campus life. The campus is safe and secure and offers a great place to live.

At IIT Kanpur a student flourishes personally and professionally. This is thanks to the varied activities and events that are a constant buzz on the campus in addition to the supportive environment that nourishes academic brilliance. When they wish to do something there are a lot of choices available to them. Students can pursue the passions they bring to the campus. Or they can take up new ones. There are many recreational facilities, hobby clubs, sports facilities and cultural societies on campus.


IIT Kanpur’s hostels boast off spacious rooms with 22 hours of eating facilities available on the campus. Every hostel has a basketball court, few badminton courts, a volleyball court, table tennis room, a television room, a computer room, a reading room for newspaper, magazines, journals, etc, and a hall office to handle hostel affairs. The basketball and volleyball courts in the hostels are floodlit, enabling students to play even at night as the day is more or less jam-packed with other activities. The hostel rooms provide electricity, clean sanitation facilities and good quality food.


IIT Kanpur’s classrooms are equipped with computer and LCD projectors that help in conducting classes with the help of presentations.


All labs are well equipped with modern facilities.


The students of the institute, apart from showing excellent academic progress, are keen to pursue their interests in sports and games. To nurture these interests, the institute provides several facilities. The institute also encourages its students to participate in the inter-IIT competition which is held every year in December at different IIT campuses across India and other competitions.

Extra – Curricular:

IIT Kanpur offers many recreational facilities, hobby clubs, sports facilities and cultural societies on campus. There are various societies being run by the student body at the institute to promote extra-curricular and co-curricular activities. These clubs ensure participation from the students in different institute level activities and prepare them for inter-college competitions. IIT Kanpur has a Dance Club, Dramatics Club, Fine Arts Club, English Literature Society, Hindi Sahitya Sabha, Music Club, Animation Club, Design Club, Film Club, Photography Club, Debate & Discussions Society and Quiz Club.


IIT Kanpur’s P.K. Kelkar Library (Formerly Central Library) is housed with all modern amenities and is situated in a magnificent three-storied building that is spread over 5730 square meters. The mission of the library is to provide information services and access to bibliographic, full text both in digital and printed resources to support the scholarly and information needs of all students, faculty members and staff. IIT Kanpur has an excellent well-equipped air-conditioned Library having high bandwidth computer network enabled with WiFi and VPN for accessing Library E-Resources round the clock from anywhere. The library is fully automated with high-end servers and more than 50 computers for in-house operations with trained manpower. The library has a collection of 2,74,362 including 14,986 E-Books, 1955 Journals, 21,086 Journals, 5777 Cds/ DVDs and a lot more.

Merit-cum-Means Scholarships for Undergraduate Students (full tuition waiver/ INR1000 pm)

Merit Cum Means Scholarship:

Students receive full tuition waiver, and pocket allowance of Rs. 1000 pm for the duration of the program. This is merit cum means based scholarship; hence, the recipients must maintain a minimum CPI of 6.5. However, if CPI falls below 6.5 (but remains above 6.0) then pocket allowance is withdrawn. A student must only submit their parental income certificate to apply for this scholarship. This scholarship can be availed by those who are other than category (SC/ST) students with annual parental income less than 4.5 lakhs.

Basic Mess & Pocket Allowance:

This scholarship can be availed by those who are category (SC/ST) students with annual parental income less than 4.5 lakhs. Under this scholarship students receive free basic mess bill and a pocket allowance of Rs. 250 pm.

Inspire Scholarship:

Students receive an annual scholarship of Rs.30,000 per semester (Rs. 60,000 annually), along with a research grant of Rs.20,000. Students of B.S programmes within the ALL INDIA RANK (AIR) 10,000 as per Common Merit LIST (CML) in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics departments are eligible for this scholarship. Students must submit an undertaking for not getting any other scholarship to the SSPC every semester to apply for this scholarship. This is a merit based scholarship; hence, the recipients must maintain a minimum CPI of 6.0.

Students can apply for scholarships and loans under the Students’ Benevolence Fund. It is granted purely on the basis of means for students who demonstrate financial need, but could not secure financial support from the Institute or any other source. Students can apply for this by filling an online form around mid-September.

Sports Scholarship:

Up to 20 scholarships are awarded per year, worth Rs.500 per month, for showing leadership in sports related activities on campus, leading to development, growth and increased participation in various sports activities. Excellence in sports, as shown in performance in Inter-IIT and other external sports meets are also awarded by means of these scholarships.

Aditya Birla Scholarship:

The top 20 students (in terms of their AIR in JEE Advanced) can apply for this scholarship. Some of these students are shortlisted for an interview on the basis of their application. This scholarship is then awarded on the basis of the interview.
