Scholarships

Scholarships at IIT Bombay

To help students financially, IIT Bombay offers a variety of scholarship programs, including Institute Scholarships, Government Scholarships, Private Scholarships, and Fellowships for Ph.D. students. Each scholarship has specific eligibility requirements in order to receive the scholarship award. The following are some of the most popular scholarship schemes offered by IIT Bombay and other Private Scholarships.

Merit Cum Means Scholarship (Institute Scholarship)

  • Merit Cumulative Means Scholarship (Institute Scholarship)
  • The Merit Cum Means Scholarship is given to new entrants based on their JEE AIR rank and annual family income of less than INR 4.5 lakhs.
  • The Merit Cum Means scholarship provides free tuition of INR 25,000 per semester as well as a monthly benefit of INR 1000 to a maximum of 25% of undergraduate students.
  • Furthermore, nearly 10% of students are given the benefit of free tuition.
  • All SC/ST students are exempt from paying tuition fees and are entitled to free messing as well as a pocket allowance of INR 250 per month.

Scholarship from the IIT Bombay Heritage Fund:

  • The Alumni of IIT Bombay in the United States established the IIT Bombay Heritage Fund to collect alumni donations for the establishment of scholarships at IIT Bombay.
  • The IIT Bombay Heritage Fund Scholarship has the same eligibility criteria as the MCM Scholarship.
  • Students wishing to apply for the IIT Bombay Heritage Fund Scholarship must have a parental annual income from all sources that does not exceed INR 5 lakhs.

IIT Bombay provides two Dr. Burjor Godrej

  • Merit Scholarships of INR 5000 per month, six Dr. Burjor Godrej Merit Cum Means Scholarships of INR 2000 per month, and ten Prof. MV Pandya Merit Cum Means Scholarships of INR 1000 per month.
  • The scholarships mentioned above are available to students admitted to the M.Sc. Chemistry Programs at IIT Bombay.
  • The highest SPI obtained by M.Sc students is the criterion for the Dr. Burjor Godrej Scholarship.
  • Furthermore, the fellowship duration is five months in each semester, so the student with the highest SPI will receive a cumulative scholarship amount of INR 25,000 for the preceding semester.
  • The MV Pandya Fellowship Merit cum Means Scholarship provides INR 10,000 per year to students whose annual parental income does not exceed INR 1.5 lakhs.

Aditya Birla Scholarship:

  • The Aditya Birla Scholarship covers the entire course and awards INR 65,000 per year to scholars. However, student performance is closely monitored for the renewal of awards each year.
  • The Aditya Birla Scholars’ performance is evaluated using both qualitative and quantitative criteria.
  • A candidate must be in the top 25% of his/her batch and have a rating of at least 7 on a 9-point scale during the course work to be eligible for renewal of the Aditya Birla Scholarship.
  • Aside from these, candidates must actively participate in the institute’s activities and write a 350-400 word essay on “Being an Aditya Birla Scholar: Experiences.”

Birla Aditya Scholarship Selection Process:

  • The information provided in the application form is used to evaluate eligible students.
  • During the application process, overall achievements, and academic and co-curricular experiences are also evaluated and weighted.
  • The candidates are initially shortlisted based on their essays and applications, and the shortlisted candidates are then invited for an interview round. However, the invited students are reimbursed for their travel and lodging expenses.
  • Candidates who pass the interview are then given the scholarship awards

The OPJEMS Scholarship

  • The OPJEMS Scholarship at IIT Bombay is a yearly scholarship worth INR 65,000.
  • At IIT Bombay, students are awarded scholarships in two categories. The students are classified as follows:
  • For all four years, two toppers from each batch were selected from the following streams: civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and metallurgical engineering.
  • For all four years, the top 12 students from each batch in any specialisation or stream.
  • The Scholarship is awarded to 112 students from 33 institutes and is based on a student’s performance in an online test followed by a personal interview.
  • However, for selection, the online test and interview will be given equal weightage.

INSPIRE Scholarship:

  • The INSPIRE Scholarship is very popular among IIT students pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
  • Every year, the INSPIRE Scholarship scheme awards 10,000 scholarships worth a total of INR 80,000 to each student pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Natural & Basic Sciences at IIT Bombay.
  • To be eligible for the INSPIRE Scholarship, a candidate must meet the following minimum requirements:
  • A candidate must have scored in the top 1% of their class in the 12th grade and have chosen Natural & Basic Sciences as a major.
  • Students who received top 10,000 rankings in the IIT Joint Entrance Examination, AIEEE top 10,000 rankings, and AIPMT top 10,000 rankings.

Aside from the scholarships listed above, there are also government scholarships available, such as the Central Sector Scholarship, NTS Scholarship, NBHM Scholarship, DBT Scholarship, and so on.
