About College

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995. At present the Institute has eleven departments and five inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines, offering BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc and PhD programmes. Within a short period, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati’s campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 km. From the heart of the city. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and vast open spaces on others, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning.

It is an Autonomous University which is approved by University Grants Commission (UGC). The institute has been recognised as the Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. IIT Guwahati is one of the prestigious institutes ranked among top 10 institutes in India.

Admission

  • Students have to qualify in JEE Main followed by JEE Advanced to secure admission in B.Tech courses.
  • A valid score in Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design (UCEED) is required to get admission in B.Des course.
  • A valid score in GATE is mandatory for M.Tech and Integrated M.Tech courses. Final admission is done through counselling.
  • IIT Guwahati conducts its own Written Test followed by an Interview to offer admission in MA (Development Studies).
  • M.Des requires a valid score in CEED conducted by IIT Bombay.
  • GATE/ NET (JRF)/ INSPIRE/ CEED qualified candidates can apply for MS by Research and Ph.D. programs.
  • IITG also offers admission in Part-Time/ External/ Self-Finance/ Sponsored and Project Staff categories.
  • For PHD programs, the selection committee will shortlist the candidates for Departmental Interview rounds.

Placements

IIT Guwahati successfully completed its first phase of the placement process. Various Participants from various IT giants like Microsoft and Oracle participated in the placement process. These companies rolled out the highest international packages i.e. USD 136,000 (Rs. 93 lakh) and USD 135,000 (Rs. 92 lakh approx.).
Tower Research participated for the first time in the placement process and rolled out the highest domestic salary package for 2017. Tower Research offer a package of Rs. 36 Lakh on its first visit to the campus.

The institute reported that 50% of the students who had enrolled for the campus placements were recruited by various reputed firms. Over a thousand students had enrolled at the Centre for Career Development (CCD), IIT Guwahati for the placement.

Infrastructure and Facilities

The 74,000 square metre Academic Complex houses the academic departments, centres, their laboratories, classrooms, etc. A spacious Administrative Building accommodates the offices of the Institute. The Computer and Communication Centre houses a modern Computer Centre and Central Library. A lecture hall complex with four lecture halls, each capable of seating 250 scholars and an auditorium of 1500 capacity provide space for teaching and holding various events/programmes. The Sports Complex comprising of an indoor sports stadium with synthetic badminton, table tennis and squash courts, gymnasium and the Students Gymkhana office, an 8 lane 50 m long swimming pool and flood-lit playing fields for all major outdoor games provide ample scope of recreation for the campus residents. A 72-room Guest House, ample faculty and staff quarters, married students’ flat-lets, eight men’s and one women’s hostels with single occupancy rooms make the residential component of the infrastructure. The Institute also has a hospital with 30 beds, a commercial complex with a restaurant and several shops and two community halls. A Conference Centre with a provision of 4 halls (2 halls with 150 capacity and 2 halls with 200 capacity) and a food court is nearing completion.


Other facilities include a campus wide network on a Gigabit Ethernet backbone with access points in every hostel room, an internal EPABX, high capacity internet connections (including access from residences), two banks with ATM facilities, a post office with Railway Passenger Reservation facility, a pre-primary school-cum-creche, a Kendriya Vidyalaya and a bus service to the city.


The Central Library, one of the important central facilities of the Institute, currently has a collection of over 1,17,000 items including 2605 subscribed online journals and magazines.


Hostel:


All the students of the Institute have been provided with hostel rooms in the campus. The accommodation is single-seater. These hostels are equipped with all modern amenities. There are facilities for sports and recreation such as satellite TV, indoor games and a gymnasium. Facilities for outdoor games like volleyball, basketball and football are also there.


Sports & Recreation:


The Institute has a Gymkhana to oversee the cultural and sports activities. The Gymkhana has a student General Secretary, a Sports Secretary, Academic Secretary, a Cultural Secretary – all of whom belong to the student community and are elected by the students.


The Gymkhana has a good collection of musical equipment for the use of its students. It also arranges different sports activities. Indoor sports facilities are available in the indoor sports stadium with synthetic badminton, table tennis, squash courts and gymnasium as well as in the hostels.


Health Care:


Medical facilities are provided to the staff and students through the 30 bedded Institute Hospital located within the campus. The Institute currently has three medical officers, all of whom are specialists.


Scholarships

Institute Scholarships:


The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati awards scholarships to its under–

graduate/ post-graduate students to promote and recognize academic

excellence, and overall growth and development of meritorious students who

have passed their respective qualifying examinations.


Scholarships shall be awarded to undergraduate/post graduate students based on the

recommendations of the scholarship committee of the institute following the norms laid

down by the statutes of the institute and as directed by the IIT council from time to

time.


Rules laid down by the senate will be used in deciding awardees.


Scholarships are liable to be withdrawn, partially or wholly, in case of

misconduct, deliberate concealment of material facts and/or supply of false

information.


Students leaving the Institute on their own accord without completing the programme

of study may be required to refund the amount of scholarship received during that

year.


During the tenure of the scholarship, the scholarship holder shall not ordinarily receive

any other scholarship, stipend, financial assistance or remuneration etc., for any work

except with the prior permission of the competent authority or as provided in the rules.


The students selected for scholarship shall not accept or hold any appointment, paid

or otherwise, and will not receive any emoluments, salary, etc. from any other source

during the tenure of scholarship.


The scholarship may be suspended or terminated at any time on the grounds of

misconduct on the part of the student concerned or on continued absence for more

than one month except on medical grounds.

The following Institute scholarships shall operate:


Institute Merit Scholarship (IMS):


IMS is available for

B.Tech./B.Des./M.Sc./M.A. students of the institute. The scholarship is meant for

the year-wise class toppers of all the streams and is awarded from the second

year. It includes tuition fee waiver and a fixed monthly stipend for eight months.


Institute Merit-cum-Means (McM) Scholarships:


Institute merit-cum-means

scholarship is awarded to B.Tech./B.Des/M.Sc/MA students of the institute strictly

on merit-cum-means basis to upto 25% of the non SC/ST students. It includes

tuition fee waiver and a fixed monthly stipend for eight months.


SC-ST Scholarships:


Scholarship is awarded to all B.Tech./B.Des/M.Sc/MA

students of the SC/ST categories. It includes a fixed monthly stipend for eight

months, free messing (only for the basic menu) and hostel seat rent waiver.

Tuition fee is waived for all SC/ST students by the statutes.


Other Scholarships:


The institute allows students to avail scholarships awarded by external Govt/non-Govt.

organizations (such as central sector scholarship schemes, scholarships form state

Govts., scholarships from private trusts etc.), provided they do not come into conflict

with any ordinance or rules of the institute.


the institute may accept donations from individuals and organizations to set up

scholarships according to prescribed procedures if it is felt that they will promote

academic activities in the institute and will lead to general growth of the institute. The

norms and conditions for the institution of such scholarships shall require approval of

the Board of Governors.


Assistantships:


Assistantships are given to all regular students (as defined by the ordinances on these

programmes) in the M.Tech, M. Des, and PhD programmes as per norms laid down

by the IIT council or the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of

India.
