The students also taught the students basic maths through various games.

Focused Group discussion with Government Municipal Hospital:

The Raigarh Zilla parishad hospital was established by government and is running efficiently from 20-25 years. The services are free for Adivasis and for others, minimal fees are charged. They provide basic first aid and also conducts normal delivery. The patient (mother and new born) receives 1500rs from the hospital for further care after delivery. The in charge of the hospital is called as NM and visits every day. For major diseases the hospital sends the patient to main city at Karjat through ambulance. All vaccinations and medicines are brought from Alibaug. The hospital has successfully completed the Rubella vaccination campaign implemented by the government in the village.

Focused Group discussion with Gram Panchayat Team:

Kushiwali village is located in Karjat Tehsil of Raigarh district in Maharashtra, India. It is situated 10km away from sub-district headquarter Karjat and 75km away from district headquarter Alibagh. Vadap is the gram panchayat of Kushiwali village.
The total geographical area of village is 288.51 hectares. Kushiwali has a total population of 1800-2000 people. There are about 500 houses in Kushiwali village. Karjat is nearest town to Kushiwali which is approximately 10km away.

Gram panchayat manages water facilities in the village. It depends on the borewell and handpumps for water. There are no sanitation facilities in the village.
Gram panchayat plans to build almost 200 toilets by next year.

Achievements:

The following were the objectives that the students achieved during their rural camp:
– Successful conduction of different surveys in schools, market & in hospital.
– Interactions with the village communities and the beneficiaries of
Gram Panchayat.
– Analysis and Interpretation of data collected.
– Preparation and submission of report on the same.

Conclusion:

We realized that life in most of rural India is actually better than cities. In cities people have money but don’t have time, it’s too chaotic with smartphone, social media updates and there are too many distractions. On the other hand, though there are limited facilities life in most of rural India is peaceful, people are nicer and happier. The camp was a huge learning experience for all the students. The objectives that were laid down for the camp were by and large met.
During the visit the students learnt how a School and hospital works in a rural area with limited resources. They understood the working of a Gram Panchayat in this area. They also learnt the consumer behaviour of the people residing in the village by visiting the market and conducting a survey.

This visit helped the students to understand the other side of India and also improved their social work principles and skills. It was immensely a great experience.
