Gurdeep Singh is well-known in the Indian power industry for his efforts to make NTPC Limited, formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation Limited, India’s leading power provider. It is India’s largest power company with an electric power generation capacity of 63925 MW (including JVs). The company has approximately 17.04 per cent of the nation’s total capability. Due to its emphasis on operating its power plants at higher levels of efficiency, it contributes to over 24% of the total generation of electricity. At the moment, NTPC generates 25 billion units of electricity each month. NTPC is a part of the Indian Public Sector Undertaking, which is run by the Ministry of Power of the Indian Government. 

NTPC Limited’s Chairman and Managing Director is Gurdeep Singh, who has worked for the company since 2015. Through his visionary leadership, he has been a driving force behind the expansion of NTPC Limited. His distinguished power sector career spans nearly three decades. He is renowned for his ability to bring about organisational change, strong execution skills, and strategic vision. He has likewise shown excellent relationship-building abilities and has been fruitful in building solid associations with his partners. 

Gurdeep Singh was born in Jammu, but he received his primary education in various Indian cities. He completed his Management Education Program at IIM Ahmedabad and holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from NIT Kurukshetra. Gurdeep Singh has also received management and leadership training from various international schools, including Said Business School in Oxford, Darden School of Management in Virginia, USA, Singapore Civil Services College in Singapore, and ISB in Hyderabad, among others. 

He joined NTPC in 1987 as an engineer trainee, and since then, he has progressed through various positions in both the public and private sectors. He has extensive knowledge of all facets of the power generation industry. He has held high-level leadership positions and positions as a plant operation engineer due to his extensive experience. He has held CxO/Senior positions in both multinational corporations (PowerGen, CLP, and AES) and Indian firms (GSECL, IDFC, and CESC). He is able to deal with intricate and complex confronting a power gaint because he worked in organisations with different cultures and in environments with multiple cultures. He was the managing director of the Gujarat State Electricity Company (GSECL) before joining NTPC. Coal swapping and freight rationalisation were both conceptualised well in advance thanks to his persistent focus on cost reduction. As a result of his visionary leadership, GSECL became highly cost-competitive and forward-thinking. 

He believes that employee empowerment, capability enhancement, process optimisation, and excellence in occupational health and safety are the keys to success. In order to prepare NTPC executives for upcoming challenges in the business world, he has placed a greater emphasis on global exposure. To maintain NTPC’s position as a leading global power company and to effectuate the necessary cultural shifts, he has launched a number of initiatives. 

NTPC Limited has added significant capacity to its portfolio under Gurdeep Singh’s leadership, and the company has achieved numerous milestones. During his residency, the organisation dispatched a few new power projects, remembering India’s biggest sun-based park for Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, with a limit of 2,000 MW. 

NTPC Limited has reported strong financial results under Gurdeep Singh’s leadership. In the fiscal year 2020-21, the company reported a net profit of Rs. 13,769 crores, which is an increase of 9.4% from the previous fiscal year. Workplace safety and health, employee empowerment, capacity expansion, and process optimisation are, in his opinion, the keys to success. Ensuring that NTPC Limited operates in a sustainable manner for the environment. The company has invested in modernising its coal-based power plants to cut emissions and has set a goal of reducing its specific water consumption by 3% by 2022 and 2023. Focusing on “Low-Cost, Low Emission” and minimising one’s impact on the environment in line with India’s ambitious goal of providing everyone with clean, affordable electricity. 

He has been a strong supporter of renewable energy, and NTPC Limited has made significant progress in this area under his direction. By 2032, the company intends to generate 30% of its installed capacity from renewable energy sources. NTPC currently has 1,000 MW of solar and 1,124 MW of wind energy installed. Instead of merely remaining a coal-based power company, NTPC is attempting to become an integrated energy company. By 2032, non-fossil fuel-based capacity should account for 30% of the total installed capacity, according to the company’s ambitious goal. 

Gurdeep Singh has been at the forefront of NTPC Limited’s digital transformation journey. The company has adopted several digital technologies to enhance its operational efficiency, including the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Gurdeep Singh’s contributions to the power sector have been widely recognised. He has been honoured with several awards, including the “CEO of the Year” award at the Businessworld Energy Awards 2020 and the “Best CEO – Maharatna PSU” award at the Business Today Best CEO Awards 2019., His annual salary in FY 2020-21 was Rs. 4.96 crore. 

Gurdeep Singh’s leadership and vision have driven NTPC Limited’s expansion. His huge experience, proactive methodology, and vision have changed NTPC into a main player in the energy business. NTPC has been able to stay ahead of the competition and adapt to shifting market conditions thanks to its focus on renewable and clean energy and his efforts to drive innovation and efficiency.
