IIT Varanasi was founded in 1919 and was formerly known as Banaras Engineering College (BENCO) by Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. The institute gained the status of IIT from BENCO in 2012, in the month of June. It strives to provide education in the field of engineering, which is worthy of future needs.
There are several engineering and science departments that cover engineering subjects like Metallurgical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering and Technology etc. IIT BHU offers these specializations with the courses on undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate level.
In 2019, National Institutional Ranking Framework has ranked IIT Varanasi 11th among other top engineering institutes in India. In 2017, it was ranked 10th. BHU has maintained its third position since the last three consecutive years in the top 100 universities list.

IIT Varanasi Courses offered & Fees Structure
There are many undergraduate, postgraduate and integrated engineering courses. These full-time courses include Civil Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical engineering, Chemical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering etc. Courses are available in 2-5 year options.
IIT Varanasi Course Highlights
- On the undergraduate level, full-time four-year engineering courses are available in nine streams of B.Tech.
- On postgraduate level, full-time two-year engineering courses are available in 14 streams of engineering.
- Integrated courses including B.Tech and M.Tech courses are available for five years duration in 14 disciplines of engineering.
- PhD courses are also available for a duration of three years in engineering in 14 disciplines.
IIT Varanasi Admission Process
All the applicants of the undergraduate, postgraduate or integrated courses have to get certain GATE or JEE Advanced score. Final selection of the candidates is based on the combined result of the aforementioned examination’s certain score, JEE Mains or GATE score and personal interview. JoSAA is the counselling round after JEE Mains is cleared, through which a candidate can choose this college over others.
- For admission in B. Tech. course, candidates require certain JEE Advanced score.
- For admission in M. Tech. course, candidates require certain GATE score.
- For admission in Integrated B. Tech. and M. Tech. courses, candidates require certain JEE Mains score.
- For admissions in PhD courses, the candidate is selected on the basis of GATE or NET-LS / CSIR/UGC NET JRF/ DBT-JRF/ ICMR JRF/ DST-INSPIRE fellowship scores.

IIT Varanasi Result & Cut-off
The students in B.Tech courses in IIT Varanasi are admitted through JEE Main score and in M.Tech courses, it is based on the GATE Scores. The cut-off list is announced after the JEE or GATE result is declared for the year. The cut-off list is prepared on the basis of the number of students participating, highest score and number of seats available in the institute.

IIT Varanasi Scholarships
IIT Varanasi provides merit-cum-means scholarship to the students. Scholarships are given to 25% of the undergraduate students. Meritorious students are provided with scholarships in the form of financial aid, tuition fees waivers etc. National Scholarship Portal is another platform, where students having family’s annual income less than 2.5 LPA from some selected institutions can apply for the scholarship. IIT BHU is one of them. Financial assistance is also provided to postgraduate and PhD students.
IIT Varanasi Campus Facilities
Spread across 1,300 acres of land, IIT Varanasi campus has a lot to offer that any student can ever ask for. The facilities offered in the campus include spacious separate boys’ and girls’ hostel, library, auditorium, IT infrastructure, sports complex, medical unit, laboratories, gymnasium, hygienic cafeteria, internet access and alumni association. Among all the things, there is a great facility to be mentioned that IIT BHU has one main library along with many departmental libraries that house more than 100,000 books.
Students, as well as the faculty members, can also subscribe to a large number of technical and scientific journals. Apart from the libraries, there are also other things to be mentioned. Every year, IIT BHU celebrates its annual techno-management festival, Technex, which has footsteps dating back to 1939. Addition to this, there is also a socio-cultural festival, named Kashiyatra, which sees participation from all over the country.
