Under Section 3 of the UGC Act of 1956, the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram, is designated as a Deemed to be University. IIST, which was founded in 2007, operates as an autonomous institution within the Government of India's Department of Space (DoS). According to the MHRD's 2020 NIRF rankings, it is one of the top 35 engineering institutes in the country. Placement at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology
IIST's Placement Cell maintains constant contact with industry, R&D organisations, and management organisations to plan for Training, Career Guidance, Internship/ Project, and Campus Placements. The Placement Cell works closely with the Institute's policies and tries to match students' interests with an appropriate job profile. Every year, the institute offers a two-month internship for both B.Tech. and M.Tech. programmes, tentatively from May to July. Internships lasting more than two months for select M.Tech programmes, on the other hand, can be arranged in accordance with the institute's policies and guidelines.
Students with a minimum CGPA criterion are absorbed in various ISRO centres until 2020. Last year, 1051 students were absorbed in ISRO centres, with 100 students being hired. The absorption to DOS/ISRO has been revised beginning with 2021 admissions; for more information, see section 8. The placement cell acts as a liaison with various companies in order to facilitate campus placements for IIST students.

Scholarship from the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology
- The top 5 students (UG/DD) admitted in 2021-22 with an AIR (All India Rank, in JEE Advanced Examination, 2021) of 1000 or higher will be eligible for a full fee waiver for the first year. They must, however, maintain a CGPA of 9.0 or higher on a scale of 10 at the end of each year in order to receive a full fee waiver for the following year.
- Students (UG/DD) admitted in 2021-22 who achieve a CGPA of 9.0 or higher (on a scale of 10) in a given semester will receive a 50% tuition fee waiver the following semester. The number of waivers granted shall be limited to ten percent (10%) of the admitted students in each year.
