The answer key for the Joint Admission Test for MSc (JAM), organised
and conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) was released
today, February 10, 2016.

JAM is an entrance test to secure a seat in MSc programmes
at IITs and IISc. There are seven test papers in the exam, including Biological
Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Mathematical
Statistics and Physics. JAM is conducted online and only in English language.

The answer key has been released for students to cross-check
their responses in the exam. If students feel that either of their answers is
correct, but is shown otherwise in the answer key, then they can challenge the
authorities for a fee of Rs 500 per answer. If the countered answer is right, the
authorities will refund the fee.

Prof V Subramanian, Organising Chairman for JAM 2016, said, “The
answer key hasn’t been released to scrutinise the results, which are difficult
to calculate at this point. It has been released to clear the doubts amongst
the students.” JAM was conducted on February 7, 2016 and approximately
30, 595 students appeared for it.

There are three different type of questions in the exam, one
is Multiple Choice Questions, in which there is only one correct answer; second
is Multiple Select Questions, which has more than one correct answer to choose
from; and third is Numerical Answer Type, in which students have to use the provided
virtual calculator to arrive at the answer.

The answer key plays an important role because a student may
have written an answer other than the one displayed in the key. Subramanian
added, “In any subject, we use different methodologies to solve the questions.
It is possible that a question has more than one correct answer, which means
numerical, or decimal is different.”

Expected date for announcement of the JAM 2016 result is
March 23.
