Railway Protection Force (RPF) was introduced in the year 1957. Ministry of Railways takes charge of RRB. The main role of RPF is to ensure protection and to maintain law and order in the railway’s department. The ranking structure in RPF is similar to that of Indian Police Service (IPS). The candidates who wish to be a part of the police department and also in railways can apply for the same. The initial pay for constable will be Rs 21,700 + allowances whereas for Sub Inspector it is Rs 35,400 + allowances. They do have various benefits like medical allowance, travel benefits and so on. Both men and women can apply for RPF exam.
Apart from RPF, there is another special division called RPSF (Railway Protection Special Force) where only male candidates can apply. It is a part of RPF. Candidates selected under RPSF will have to undergo vigorous training for nearly 6 to 10 weeks at Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. Their main role is to ensure protection in an emergency situation. So they often move from place to place. RPSF came into existence in the year of 1962 during the invasion by China.
There are 16 major zonal divisions in railways. For the ease of conducting the exams, all 16 divisions are categorized under five major groups and the sixth group is for RPSF. Exams are conducted for all the six groups simultaneously. Exams are conducted in 3 Phases.

Cut Off as the name implies it is the minimum qualifying mark for any exam. There are two types of cut off overall cut off and sectional cut off. CBT exam pattern has three sections and a candidate has to score minimum mark in each and every section. This is sectional cut off. The total mark is 120 and a candidate must score a minimum of total mark called overall cut off to get qualified to the next level.
Cut off mark varies every year and depends mainly on the difficulty level of the questions, candidate count and vacancy. Cut off mark is different for different reservation and also varies among male and female candidates. This is mainly to help the underprivileged people. The cutoff mark will be usually high for UR category than others. The vacancy for the posting will also vary among the reservation. Nearly ten times the number of candidates than the vacancy will be called for the next level. So one should be aware that cut off alone will not be enough. It is just the minimum score which may be considered as the eligibility criteria for entering into the subsequent levels and based on the cut off mark merit list is prepared. Knowing the cut off marks of the previous year may help to analyze oneself while taking the mock tests. RPF has released the cut off mark for the year of 2015.
