The University of Kerala was started in the name of the University of Travancore. This university is one of the first 16 universities started in Kerala. The university was founded in the year 1866, by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal.
Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma was the first chancellor of the university and the Vice-Chancellor was C. P. Ramaswamy Ayyar, the then Prime Minister of the state.
Kerala University has more than forty departments for different academic disciplines. It has Palayam Campus, Kariavattom campus and more. UG and PG programmes offered in the university include MBA, BBA, MCA, BFA, BHM, LLM, MCJ etc. Under these departments, several courses are taught with some specializations in Gandhian Studies, Nanotechnology etc.

Courses offered and Fee structure
The University offers many courses on undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Most of the courses are available in full-time options while some of the courses are available in distance learning options too.
These courses are offered by colleges like Mar Ivanios College, Bishop Moore College, SNC Sree Narayana College and School of Distance Education (University of Kerala). Integrated courses are also available in the university.
Undergraduate courses
Courses offered on the undergraduate level include B.A., B.Arch, B.Com, BEd, BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts), BPA (Bachelor of Performing Arts), BPEd (Bachelor of Physical Education), B.Sc, B.Tech, B.Voc (Bachelor of Vocational Courses) etc. The degree, B.Tech is offered in disciplines like Information Technology, Mechanical Stream, Aeronautical Engineering, Applied Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering etc.
BPA has subjects like Dance, Violin, Vocal, Mridangam etc. B.Com provides elaborate study in Commerce & Hotel Management and Catering, Commerce with Computer Application, Commerce and Tax Procedure and Practice etc.
BA course is available in the disciplines of Music, Philosophy, Sociology, Malayalam and Mass Communication, Islamic History, Journalism and Mass Communication and Video Production etc.
All these courses are covered in three to four years duration. B.A. and B.Com course fee for different subjects is between Rs. 15,350 and Rs. 16,350. The B.Sc. course fee is Rs, 17,500 (approx.). And B.Tech course fee ranges between Rs. 63,000 and Rs. 1.40 lakhs.
Postgraduate Courses
The PG courses available at the university are MA, MBA, MCA, MCJ (Master of Communication and Journalism), M.Com, MPA (Master of Performing Arts), MSW (Master of Social Work), MTA (Master of Tourism Administration), MVA (Master of Visual Arts) etc. M.A. includes subjects like Sociology, Sanskrit, History, Politics, and Business Economics etc.
MBA is offered in full-time and part-time options. M.Sc. includes specializations like Counseling Psychology, Geology, Home Science, Bioinformatics, Polymer Chemistry, Statistics, Medicinal Chemistry, Food and dairy Biotechnology etc.
These PG courses are covered in a two-year duration. Speaking of the fee structure, M.A., M Sc. and M.Com full-time course fee are between Rs. 2,559 and Rs. 13,000 and the management programme, the MBA course fee is Rs. 26,140.
Integrated courses
The university offers integrated courses like B.Com + LLB, B.A. + LLB etc. These courses are offered in full-time options and are covered in a five-year period.
Admission Process
All the applicants are selected for Kerala University admission in a particular course on the basis of marks scored in the qualifying exam. The qualifying exams conducted by the university for Kerala University admissions in different courses include GATE(Graduate Aptitude Test Engineering), CAT (Common Admission Test), CMAT (Common Management Admission Test), KLEE (Kerala Law Entrance Exam), KEAM (Kerala Engineering Agricultural Medical) etc. B.Com LLB candidates have to get a certain score in the KLEE entrance exam.
The B.Tech candidates are required to get a certain score in KEAM while MBA candidates require certain CAT/CMAT marks to get a seat in the university. These qualifying exams include multiple-choice questions on topics of General Knowledge, Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning etc. The qualifying exam is followed by a personal interview round and a counselling round.

Results and Cut-off
Kerala University announces the cut-off list of several disciplines after the declaration of the Kerala University results for the qualifying exams for the different programmes. Candidates have to cross the cut-off mark for entering into a particular courses.
The cut-off list is prepared on the basis of appearing candidates, their scores, difficulty level of the exam and the number of seats available for a course. Candidates who cross the cut-off mark become eligible to be a part of the academic journey in the university.
