IIT Guwahati Admission Process

To get the admission in undergraduate courses at IIT Guwahati, all the applicants have to pass JEE Mains. JEE Mains examination is followed by JoSAA – the counselling round as well as the second step of the admission procedure of the institute.

Similarly, on postgraduate level admission, candidates must have a valid score card of GATE examination. Based on the combined results of the previous examination result and JEE or GATE result and most importantly on the performance in the personal interview round in some of the cases, the final selection is done.

IIT Guwahati Admission Highlights

  • For admission in B.Tech. course, candidates must have a minimum of 75% marks in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/ Biology as main subjects and require JEE Main score.
  • For admission in M.Tech. course, candidates must have a BE or B.Tech degree in the relevant discipline with a minimum of 60% (55% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate or M.Sc or AMIETE degree with 60% marks. Students seeking admission in Sponsored and Part-Time modes must have at least two years of work experience in the relevant field and the final selection is done on the basis of a certain GATE score.
  • For M.Tech+PhD and MS (Engg.)+ PhD the candidates need to be BE or B.Tech in the related discipline with 70% marks in aggregate or B.Tech degree from any IIT with 80% marks, the selection will be done on the basis of GATE score.
  • For admission in Ph. D. course, candidates need to be Master’s in Engineering/ Technology with 60% marks or Bachelor’s in Engineering or Technology with 70% marks in aggregate and require certain marks in the qualifying exam with the internal assessment. 
  • For PDF candidates must have a PhD in the relevant discipline with 60% (55% for SC/ST) from a recognized university followed by two interview rounds.

IIT Guwahati Admission Procedure

UG Course

To get admission in undergraduate Bachelor of Technology programme the candidates need to have a minimum of 75% marks in 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/ Biology as main subjects. Based on the JEE Main and JEE Advanced, the final selection is done.

PG Course

To secure a seat in postgraduate Master of Technology, integrated M.Tech+PhD and MS(Engg.)+PhD the candidates must have BE/ B.Tech in the relevant discipline with 60% (55% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate.

The willing candidates with M.Sc or AMIETE degree with 60% marks. Students seeking admission in Sponsored and Part-Time modes must have at least two years of work experience in the relevant field. The final selection will be done on the basis of GATE score.

Doctoral Course

To get admission in the PhD course the candidate must have Master’s in Engineering/ Technology with 60% marks or Bachelor’s in Engineering/ Technology with 70% marks in aggregate. The final list of the candidates will be prepared on the basis of GATE/ NET (JRF)/ CEED/ INSPIRE.

The college also offers a Post Doctoral Fellowship. The candidates can apply after the PhD with 60% of marks from a recognised university.

Shortlisted candidates will be called for the Interview rounds conducted by the selection committee. There will be two interview rounds, one at the Departmental level and other by IPDFSC
