IIT Guwahati Overview

Established by an act of parliament in 1994, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) began its academic journey in 1995. Among other IITs in the system, this branch in Guwahati Assam is the 6th on a row. 

The institute offers many undergraduate and postgraduate courses in full-time options. IIT Guwahati has several technical, science and humanities courses to offer on a full-time basis. In the Doctoral level, it also offers PhD courses. 

IIT Guwahati was ranked 98th in Asia. According to QS BRICS University rankings, IIT Guwahati is ranked among 510th -550th. In 2018, this property had a ranking of 52nd. National Institutional ranking Framework has placed IIT Guwahati on the 7th place in Engineering and 9th in overall in 2019.

It was ranked 4th among Top Government Universities in 2018, and 9th in 2016, by India Today. Outlook India has also ranked this institute 7th among other IITs in India. 

IIT Guwahati is ranked 14th among 20 small & world’s best universities in the latest Times Higher Education rankings. Shri Satyapal Singh is the chairman of the institution. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati offers many undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate engineering courses like Ph. D. in Chemical Engineering, M. Tech. in Electronics and Electrical Engineering, B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering. These courses are covered in different time periods.

IIT Guwahati Course Highlights

• On Under Graduate level, full-time four-year engineering courses are available. 
• On Post Graduate level, full-time two-year engineering courses are available.
• One M.Tech+Ph.D integrated course, which is also full-time and has a two-year duration, is also available.
• On the doctorate level, full-time four-year PhD on engineering subjects are offered.

IIT Guwahati Admission Process

All the applicants of undergraduate and postgraduate courses have to pass JEE Mains or GATE examinations, respectively to get admitted to the institute. The selection is done through the JEE Mains examination followed by JoSAA, which is the counselling round. The final selection is based on the combined results of the previous examination result and JEE or GATE result along with the candidate’s performance on personal interview. 

• For admission in B. Tech. course, candidates require certain JEE Mains score.
• For admission in M. Tech. course, candidates require certain GATE score.
• For admission in Ph. D. course, candidates require certain marks in the qualifying exam with the internal assessment.

IIT Guwahati has a great placement record over the years. Every year many reputed companies visit the campus and offer various job opportunities. The passed out students get relevant jobs after completing their studies in the institute. They get placed in prestigious companies with a good salary package. The highest salary package offered to students till date is 44 LPA. The average salary package is 11 LPA. Top recruiters include Google, ITC, TCS, HP, Unitech, HCL, Myntra, Samsung, etc.
