Dr. G. L. Sharma started his teaching and research career in 1960 and taught for two years in Rajasthan University. He joined Punjab Govt Education Department in 1962 He was Head of the Dept of Commerce, Govt College Ludhiana (1963-66).
During 1982-1985, he was Reader in Finance, Department of Business Administration, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. He completed a research project-Institutional Financing of Industrial Growth with special reference to Northern Nigeria-A Competitive study of India and Nigeria.
