Another feather in the cap of the Nizam’s city

The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad, IITH) is a public university started in August 2008. IIT Hyderabad currently runs from a temporary campus located at Ordnance Factory Medak’s estate in Yeddumailaram, while the permanent campus in Kandi being constructed. IITH’s permanent campus measures 576-acre (2.33 sq.km) and is on NH-9 near the Outer Ring Road (Hyderabad).

The smart campus is designed to be self-sufficient in energy and water conservation. The campus would have water harvesting for its own consumption and water treatment plant that can be used for other purposes like washing and gardening. One academic building, class rooms, seminar hall, 10 hostels, each accommodating 192 students – of them two girls hostels each having a strength of 200 students will be ready when operations shift to the new campus in early 2015.

Academics at IITH

IIT Hyderabad has ten engineering departments, three science departments, one liberal arts (humanities) department and one design department:

IIT Hyderabad offers Undergraduate B.Tech degrees in six disciplines of Engineering, M.Tech degrees in eight disciplines of Engineering, postgraduate and Research degrees across all disciplines in Engineering, Sciences and Liberal Arts. It also offers M.Sc degrees in Chemistry and Physics and PhD. in 11 disciplines. M.Phil degree is presented in Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Economics, English, Psychology, and Sociology. For the M.Des, 2 yr programme admissions are through CEED.

Admission to the B.Tech programme is through JEE while admission to M.Tech is via GATE. Admission to the M.Sc program is through JAM. Ph.D admission requires B.Tech or M.Tech/GATE qualification for engineering departments or NET qualification for Science departments.

IIT Hyderabad admitted the first batch of 111 B.Tech. students, and started functioning on August 20, 2008. Three departments, CSE, EE & ME were initiated. In the 2009-10 academic year, IITH admitted 120 B.Tech. students, 35 M.Tech. students and 10-15 Ph.D. students.

Currently IITH has nearly 25 sponsored R&D projects including several international projects. IITH so far has 572 publications, 5 patents filed, and over 120 sponsored projects.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Elan is the annual technical and cultural festival of IITH. It is usually held in
the beginning of the year (January/February). It includes workshops, lectures,
demonstrations, technical exhibitions, cultural performances and live concerts.
ηvision is the inter-institute
technical festival of IIT Hyderabad generally held in October.

IITH Placements

The placements at IIH for the academic year 2013 – 2014 have
yielded 121 offers for 253 registered students. The highest salary offered this
year is 22 LPA and the average salary is 7.8 LPA. In the 2012-13 batch nearly
85% students from the graduate class were placed.
