1. Veerappa Moily chosen for Saraswati Samman 2014

i. Former
Union Minister and veteran Congress leader Veerappa Moily has been chose for  the Saraswati Samman for 2014.

ii. He
has been selected for his Kannada poem Ramayana Mahanveshanam, which was first published in
2007.

iii. The work,
which is in five volumes, was later translated in English, Telugu, and Hindi
languages.

iv. The only
other ‘Saraswati Samman’ recipient for Kannada literature has been well-known
Kannada novelist, S L Bhyrappa.

v. ‘Saraswati
Samman’ is conferred on the writers of prose or poetry of outstanding value.

Note: i. Saraswati Samman was instituted by K.K.
Birla Foundation in 1991.

ii. The inaugural award was given to Harivanshrai
‘Bachchan’ for his four volume autobiography, Kya Bhooloon Kya Yaad Karoon, Needa Ka Nirman Phir, Basere Se Door and Dashdwar se Sopan Tak.

2. Bhagyashree
scheme launched in Maharashtra

i. Bhagyashree scheme for girl child was
launched by Chief Minister of Maharashtra in the state which will replace
existing Sukanya scheme.

ii. Under the scheme, the state
government will deposit an amount of 21200 rupees in bank for a girl child born
in a Below the Poverty Line (BPL) family.

iii. The
Bhagyashree scheme aims at providing one lakh rupee on maturity after the girl
completes 18 years of age.

3. PM launches
first indigenous rotavirus vaccine

i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the
first indigenously developed and manufactured rotavirus vaccine, which will
help in diarrhoea cases.

ii. Every year, diarrhoea caused by rotavirus
results in up to 10 lakh hospitalisations and kills nearly 80,000 children
under the age of 5.

iii. The three-dose ROTAVAC vaccine, developed
through a collaboration between India and the United States, is expected to
help bring about a significant reduction in the 100,000 infant deaths caused by
the rotavirus diarrhoea in India.

4. Sadashivrao
Dadoba Mandlik passed away

i. Former Lok Sabha member Sadashivrao Dadoba
Mandlik passed away following a brief illness. He was 83.

ii. He was from Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)
and became member of the 15th Lok Sabha from Kolhapur constituency.

5. Manik Sarkar
launched First Kisan call centre in North East

i. Manik Sarkar Chief Minister of Tripura
launched First Kisan Call Centre (KCC) of North-East opened in the Agartala.

ii. The Kisan Call Centre will give immediate solution and real time
advisory to farmers if they need expert consultation regarding seed
procurement, agro-metric, fertilizer, soil health, pesticides usage and
marketing of the produces.

iii. It
will be run by a private enterprise with experts of agriculture, horticulture,
fisheries and animal husbandry.
