Sustainability is a contemporary topic. It is important for any organisation to pay back sustainable opportunities to the society in the end. Big organisations need to think beyond monetary gain. Taking outmost care of all the stakeholders is a prime concern.

At FIIB, Sustainability is a key pillar on which FIIB rests its education and principles. It is with this as an inspiration, FIIB invites noted industry members to share best practices of Sustainability that are practiced in their respective organisations. The speakers visit the campus and interact with the students giving them insights into Sustainability- which is the way ahead for all industries.

This week students got a chance to meet Brig. Rajiv Williams, Corporate Head – CSR, Jindal Stainless Limited who shared Sustainability Practices at Jindal Steel. Brig. Williams introduced sustainability from a broader perspective as a cultural issue. He elaborated how it is all about dissemination of knowledge, capabilities and happiness of the community that is the epitome of business. One needs to move out the comfort zone and contribute towards these practices. The ideal situation is when one is able to figure out the trade-off between the factors of risk and return. There is now a wave of awareness running among organisations regarding the creating true value of business practices.

During his interaction Brig Williams shared some principles of sustainability at JSL. According to him, the principles of sustainability mainly revolve around the following factors:

1. Good governance 2. Transparency 3. Ethics 4. Accountability

The manufacturing sector faces a number of challenges since there is emission of a huge amount of CO2 gas into the atmosphere. The green belt creation is a new innovative method for steel hubs. In Rajasthan farmers are acting as partners for big set ups by investing their own money and will act as stakeholders. The sustainability programme at JSL has these key objectives:

1. To reduce carbon footprint 2. To engage in child health programme 3. Facilitation of inclusive growth 4. Women Empowerment

JSL has collaborated with Global Business Initiative (GBI) to promote and protect human rights within the company and its area of operations. The engagement will strengthen partnerships through training programmes and exposure of Management & employees on the issues related with human rights.

Driven by an integrated ‘Quality, Environmental, Occupational Health and Safety’ Policy, Jindal Stainless Limited is now marching towards benchmarking its processes in the field of Qualify, Safety, Health and Environment. The operations are dependent on the use of natural resources and have consequently incorporated energy management into its ISO 9001; Quality Management Systems (QMS) and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) initiatives.

Hearing Brig. Williams has been rewarding in many ways and I look forward to more speakers at Fortune Institute of International Business
