Duolingo Exam Pattern 2026
The Duolingo English Test (DET) is scored on a scale from 10 to 160. The test comprises three sections designed to assess the candidate’s English language proficiency in various aspects. The difficulty of the questions is not predetermined, so you might encounter both easy and challenging questions at any point.
Upon starting the test, you’ll navigate through three distinct sections:

Section 1: Introduction and Onboarding
This section familiarizes candidates with the rules and requirements of the test. It lasts for 5 minutes and includes:
- Verifying that your computer’s camera, speakers, and microphone are working properly.
- Submitting your government-issued photo ID.
- Reviewing the test rules and requirements.
Section 2: Adaptive Test
The Adaptive Test evaluates reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills over 45 minutes. As a graded section, the difficulty of questions adapts to the candidate’s performance, with the system adjusting the difficulty based on previous answers.
The adaptive nature of the test means that questions are drawn from a broad pool, ensuring variety and minimizing repetition. The test concludes once the system has accurately assessed the candidate’s proficiency level based on their responses.

Section 3: Video Interview, Writing, and Speaking Test
The final section is a 10-minute video interview that includes both writing and speaking samples. This part of the test involves open-ended prompts and requires the use of a front-facing camera, a microphone, working speakers, and a reliable internet connection. During this section, you will:
- Describe an image
- Speak about a given situation
- Speak on a topic for a few minutes
What to Expect:
- You will be given prompts and asked to respond in detail.
- Question Types: Includes both Writing and Speaking Samples.
- Speaking Sample: Allows for responses of 1–3 minutes.
- Writing Sample: Allows for responses of 3–5 minutes.
- You can review your responses after the test. These samples, along with your scores, will be shared with the institutions that receive your results.
