About College

National Institute of Technology Silchar, earlier called as Regional Engineering College was established in the year 1967.  The academic program in NIT Silchar kicked-off in the year 1977. The institute was recognized as Deemed to be University in 2002. This fully funded NIT was declared as the Institute of National Importance in 2007.

The institute offers many courses on several academic levels like undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate. These courses include B. Tech, M. Tech, MBA, M.Sc. and PhD. There are several specializations available in the institute such as Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering etc to choose.

National Institutional Ranking Framework has placed NIT Silchar on 65th position in 2019. NIT Silchar ranking is 10th among other top government universities given by India Today. According to Data Quest, National Institute of Technology Silchar is on the 18th place among other engineering colleges and 14th among top government T-schools. NIT Silchar World ranking is 65.

209 expert faculty members run the institution under the guidance of chairman and director of the institute Prof. Sivaji Bandyopadhyay. These faculty members have years of teaching experience and they fill their students’ minds with the light of knowledge. NIT Silchar Courses offered and Fee Structure

NIT Silchar offers many undergraduate engineering courses for students like B. Tech in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering etc. Postgraduate courses offered by the institute include M. Tech in Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, Power and Energy Systems Engineering, Material & Manufacturing Technology etc. Doctorate courses include PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering etc. NIT Silchar fee structure for B. Tech and M. Tech course is 1.3 lakh and 70,000 per annum, respectively.

NIT Silchar Admission Process

All the applicants are admitted to several engineering courses on the basis of their qualifying exam score. Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) score is considered for the applicants of B. Tech course. JEE Mains is followed by a counselling round JoSAA and personal interview round.  Similar to the NIT Silchar MBA, to consider the students for M. Tech applicants, a Graduate Aptitude Test Engineering (GATE) score taken into consideration. 

For the admission in NIT Silchar PhD course,  applicants’ admission depends on the marks scored in the qualifying exam. However, the final selection of the candidates depends on their previous exam score, GATE or JEE Mains score and the personal interview round score.

  • For admission in full-time B. Tech course, JEE Mains score is considered.
  • For admission in full-time M. Tech course, GATE score is considered.
  • For admission in the PhD course, marks in the qualifying exam are taken into consideration.

The Training and Placement Cell facilitates the placements of students according to their skills and interest. Many companies visit the campus every year with job opportunities for students. Before every placement session, students are given training by the institute to give hands-on experience to face the reality of the competitive world. B. Tech and M. Tech students get placed in the esteemed companies. NIT Silchar M. Tech placements depend on students’ academic performance and personal interview score. The top recruiters of the institute include  Accenture, BHEL, BOC, BharatBenz, Citi, Escorts, HCC, Ericsson, Godrej, HCL, IDEA, Indian Oil, Mahindra, Sony, Tata etc. The placement procedure starts with interested companies sending mail to the Training and Placement cell of the institute. Job Notification Form (JNF) is issued by the institute and after allotment of date, company visits the campus and on its completion declares final selection list. Among all the streams, NIT Silchar CSE placements have witnessed a major success over the years.

NIT Silchar Result & Cut-off

The NIT Silchar results related to the candidates’ selection is announced after the declaration of GATE and JEE Mains score for the year. A cut-off list is prepared for B. Tech and M. Tech candidates. This cut-off list is the final step towards admission in the institute on a certain course. Candidates are required to cross the cut-off mark in order to get admitted to the institute. This cut-off mark is prepared on the basis of the number of participating candidates, their scores in the qualifying exam, the difficulty level of the exam and number of seats available in the institute. B.Tech candidates are required to clear the JEE Mains cut-off score while M. Tech candidates are required to cross the GATE cut-off score.

NIT Silchar Campus Facilities

How to reach NIT Silchar?

NIT Silchar is located in the Cachar district in Assam. It can be easily communicable via rail, road and air. The institute can be reached through Lumding or Guwahati. Both the places have a direct link with Silchar, and there are daily train services available between Silchar and Lumding.

NIT Silchar campus has many on-site facilities that any student can desire for in a campus.  The classrooms are well equipped with teaching supplements. The canteen and mess provide hygienic food and drink items. These facilities include an administrative building, workshops for creative and technical pursuits, a big NIT Silchar library building with peaceful reading room and stack room, separate NIT Silchar hostels for boys and girls. There are eight boys hostels and two girls hostels, activity area, guest house, Continuing Education Centre (CEC), playground for sports, indoor games court, a bank, a shopping centre and a post office.  These amenities are all a student can ask for in the campus. Apart from these, NIT Silchar fest is a popular event among all colleges in our country. Incandescence is the name of the fest, which is one of the most awaited one happens in the month of February every year.
