In this article,we are discussing National Highways in India.
a)
The network of National Highways in India are
managed & maintained by the Central government of India.
b)
The total length of these highways is 92,851 kms
as of 2015. This includes 1,000 km limited access expressways.
c) Out of the total 92,851 kms of National Highways, 22,900 km of highways are four laned & remaining 50,000 km are double laned.
d) The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is the autonomous agency responsible for building, upgrading & maintaining most of the national highways.
e) NHAI is managing The National Highways Development Project (NHDP) to upgrade, rehabilitate major highways in India.
f) The National Highways Constitute around 1.7% of total Indian roads & 40% of traffic.
g) As part of NHDP’s future projects, over 30,000 km of new highways are planned to be constructed.c) Out of the total 92,851 kms of National Highways, 22,900 km of highways are four laned & remaining 50,000 km are double laned.
h) Longest National Highway is NH7. It runs
between in Uttar Pradesh to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, covering a distance of
2,369 km.
i)
The shortest national highway is NH47A which is
of just 6 km , from Ernakulam to Kochi Port.
j)
In state wise distribution of national highways,
the length of the highways running through Uttar Pradesh is highest (7,863 km)
where as it is lowest for Goa (262 km).
k)
The Union territories, highest length of
highways are in Andaman Nicobar (330 km) where as it is lowest in Chandigarh
(15.28 km)
Golden
Quadrilateral :
i)
It is a central government project to create a network of highways
connecting four major metropolitan cities (Mumbai-Delhi-Chennai-Kolkata) with
any important industrial, agricultural and cultural centers in India.
ii)
It is the
Highest Highway Project In India & fifth longest in the world.
iii)
The fist phase of the project consisted of
building 5,846 km of four/six lane express highways. The project was completed
in 2012.
iv)
The National Highways Authority of India manages
this project under the Ministry of Road, Transport & Highways.
North-south-East-West corridor (NS-EW)
:
i) It is the largest ongoing highway project in India. Under this
project, 7,142 km expressways are to be built connecting Srinagar, Kanyakumari,
Porbandar & Silchar.
ii) This Project is managed by National Highways Authority of India.
iii) It is the second phase of National Highways Development Project.
iv)
In combination with Golden Quadrilateral network, it forms a highway
network to connect many important manufacturing, commerce & cultural
centers.
