We at PaGaLGuY bring you this series of articles explaining some of these important concepts/events.

In this article we are discussing various characteristics of Planets other than Earth.

1. Mercury :

Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun.

It is the second hottest planet in the Solar System.

It is the smallest planet in our Solar System.

Mercury has no satellites.

It has no atmosphere. Due to its small size, it has a very low gravity which isn’t sufficient to hold atmosphere.

It is the closest planet to Earth.

It rotates around itself in a clockwise manner. (From East to West)

Venus has no satellites.

It is the hottest planet in our Solar System.

Early in the morning or in the evening Venus is visible in the sky. It appears very bright because its thick clouds reflect most of the sunlight that reach it, (about 70%) back into space.

This planet’s seasonal variations are similar to that of Earth. However, the seasons on Mars are twice longer than those on Earth.

Mars has two satellites. They are Phobos and Deimos.

4. Jupiter

This is the biggest planet in the Solar System with respect to size and mass.

Jupiter has strongest gravitational force and magnetic field.

It has the highest escape velocity.

It has a faint ring around it.

Jupiter has the largest number of satellites, which are called as Jovian satellites. They are 63 in total. Ganymede is the largest satellite in our Solar System.
