What I knew before I came to Mumbai (WIK) and What Mumbai Taught me in the past 8 years.

WIK Judge people by their work not their background

WMT – It’s all about some kinda “background” – always. One can cover up the inability to do good work by saying that one’e taking bigger gambles and creating something that will “change the world” This buys a lot of time. So even the ones with solid background (read IIMs) also can bullshit their way for months/years. So, bottom line is – Get a background made, then show off the same without much quality work, (dishing out “globe”) and do well for yourself. Such people also judge others through the same lenses. You don’t belong to the “right” set to talk to if they feel you don’t have a background

WIK When someone gifts you something, always value the intention and emotion behind the gift

WMT – Puhleez. Please look at the price online once the gifts are given to you to figure out who is a better “friend”. It’s taught to kids here. So you will find grown ups doing the same.

WIKBetter yourself everyday, and stay humble

WMT – Humbleness? You would “die” here dude. Always figure out a way to be “seen”, “heard”, and get attention. Bettering oneself is a waste of time, when you can get all you want by being “bol bachan” or the boss’ favourite pet.

WIKRespect others so that you are respected

WMT – Disrespect and make them look silly. Only then there is true respect

WIK At the toughest of times, people you love would be irrational, but you should be true to them

WMT – Rule no.1: there is no one you love so much that you will take such BS. So forget it! There is enough to drink at Janata’s bar rather than to worry about someone’s “feelings” (duh)

WIKShow your care, love, truthfulness, humbleness and maturity always as a mark of your identity

WMT – Your identity should be defined by – over confidence, brash behavior, bitchiness, politics, making others feel miserable, making others look bad so that you look good, and by being a self centered hero.

WIK“I” am important but what I stand for or work for is more important

WMT – Bholenaath. Only “I” am important. No one else should even matter. My money, My car, My food, My this, My that. The List continues. So, matter of fact, I am important, and all the work etc is a way to make more money so that I can afford to buy more show-off.

So did Mumbai win? Or did I stick to what I knew? What is the “right” gospel actually? WIK or WMT? Are our parents’ values outdated?
