Karnataka will get an Indian Institute of Technology this
academic year, which will be based in Dharwad. The IIT will open after quite a
few political machinations
that took place between Dharwad & Raichur, which was the location some leaders
wanted the IIT to be hosted.

In October, it was released that IIT Dharwad will operate from the Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI)
building in Dharwad as a temporary campus. It will have 250 students in the
first year.

Setting all politics aside, the state government appointed the Dharwad District Collector as the Nodal Officer for the IIT in November
this year. However, he had no idea what needs to be done next, except that IIT
Bombay will be acting as the mentor for the fledgling institute.

After the appointment, the protests that had been going on
for Raichur to be the venue for Karnataka’s IIT were called off.
