JEE 2016: Eight reasons to pick an autonomous engineering college

Well yeah, this write-up is about the famous autonomous colleges. Yes, the ones which tend to:

  • Be super-rare and different.
  • Have higher cut-offs.
  • Guarantee placements as well as a bright future.

Colleges are granted autonomy to speed-up the decision-making process while promoting research, innovation and all-round development.

You’ll find autonomous colleges in almost every field, be it science, medical, engineering, law, management, architecture or design.

These include the renowned:

  • IITs – Indian Institutes of Technology
  • NITs – National Institutes of Technology
  • IIITs – Indian Institutes of Information Technology
  • SPAs – School of Planning and Architecture
  • IIMs – Indian Institutes of Management
  • IISERs – Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research
  • AIIMS – All India Institutes of Medical Sciences
  • NLU – National Law Universities
  • IIST – Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology

And many more….

I’m talking about the colleges which are rather a class apart!

Wondering what makes these colleges so special? Want to know what these colleges have in common besides being the best in their respective fields? Let’s take a sneak peek.

1. You study advanced syllabus:

Autonomous colleges revise their syllabus every two or three years while universities may take as long as eight years. Being autonomous, implementing decisions in these colleges is evidently easier than universities. Every department is at liberty to choose the subjects for its courses as well as the syllabus of these subjects. And hence, the content of this syllabus relates with the most recent advancements in the respective fields.

2. You achieve higher grades:

Although the paper may be tough, you will never suffer due to poor grades. This is because autonomous colleges adopt relative grading. The highest marks in a subject, albeit low, will give you the highest pointer of 10. The pointers of students are evaluated considering the highest marks. This way, the topper always achieves a perfect 10!

3. You carry a brand name:

Another perk of being an IITian or IIMian is that you are always an object of people’s awe. This is nothing but the effect produced by the brand names of autonomous colleges.

4. Your notes are your textbook:

You are supposed to refer standard textbooks. But in the end, the notes penned during lectures tend to be your textbooks. This is because, in these colleges, teachers set the question papers. And they inadvertently give hints about what’s going to come in the exams.

5. Non-existent externals:

Though externals are required to evaluate the marks for practical and oral examination, they don’t matter much. Everything depends on the internal teachers.

6. You have more vacations:

Autonomous colleges follow a strict schedule. This implies completion of portion well before the deadline. Everything, the tests, term-end, practicals, exams seem to flow by in a trice and so, in these colleges, you end up with much longer vacations, as compared to universities, ranging between 1.5 to 2 months. In colleges like IITs, NITs and IIMs, students start approaching the Training and Placement Officers (TPOs) to apply for internships right after their exams to increase their chances of getting into a dream company.

7. Transparency:

These colleges believe in transparency. Here, there’s no such thing called ‘reassessment of answer-sheets.’ This is because as soon as the answer-sheets are assessed, they are shown to the students. Discrepancies, if any, are addressed accordingly.

8. Companies want you:

These colleges offer 100% placements. And there are dream companies like Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Samsung, etc offering packages as high as 2 crores.

All in all, autonomous colleges have got your backs.

So, if you are confused while choosing between an autonomous college and a non-autonomous college, now you know what to do!
