ABOUT SESSION

The session was conducted by Prof. R P Mohanty for the PGDM students of Operations and Supply Chain Management over the topic “Total Quality Management”.

Prof. Sir took us through the basics of basics of quality, that can’t be found in any book or journal. He defined Quality as an obsession or fitness for use i.e. unless and until the service or product is not fit for use than it is not a quality entity. F.W.Taylor, the originator of Quality, defines Quality as “value” which is Utilities by cost. So, in order to have max. value one has to maximize utilities keeping cost constant or minimizing cost keeping utilities constant or one can do both maximize utilities and minimize cost.

Sir explained in order to achieve quality one should have a Tacit knowledge, like in quality Power(P) is directly proportional to capacity, C is capability and A is Actuality. In chronological order it is A<C<P. In short critical thinking and innovation is the key for achieving quality.

Prof. Mohanty interlinked the theoretical knowledge of quality with spiritual knowledge i.e. body is denoted by hands which means quality of doing, mind is denoted by head which means quality of thinking and intellect is denoted by heart which means spirit of mankind

Mohanty Sir used PDCA (plan–do–check–act or plan–do–check–adjust) as an example to relate it with quality and spirituality i.e. if one has to provide Quality service or Quality product, humanity and mankind should be kept in mind.

By giving all these examples Prof. Mohanty conveyed that “Do the right things right in first time and every time”. This is the only way a perfect Quality can be achieved and maintained. Quality is nothing but the truth which is based on facts and research-based studies can help achieving that standard of quality.

The session was very fruitful for the students of Operations and Supply Chain Management as they gained a lot of insight on the industry front and became aware of the eventual possibilities. The session made the students aware of the importance of Mathematics, Critical and Innovative Thinking how can they be used to bring in the required change. The session was attended by the Honorable Dean of ITM Business School, Nav Mumbai Dr. Saritprava Das. Other faculties who attended the session were Asst. Director Dr. Veni Nair, Prof. Jasmine Jha, Dr. V V Sople, Prof. Deepthy and many more. We, the students of Operations and Supply Chain Management, would like to thank Prof. BVR Murthy for organizing such an insightful session.
