The Indian Institute of Technology
Patna (abbreviated IIT Patna or IITP) is one of the eight new IITs established by the Government of India under “The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act”, 2011. The
permanent campus of the Institute is coming up at Bihta approximately 34 kms
from Patna. The foundation stone for the Bihta Campus was laid by Sri Kapil Sibal in 2011. The institute’s transit campus is located on
the campus of Navin Government Polytechnic in Patliputra Colony Patna.

There are five hostels
on campus of which one is for female students. Basketball, Volleyball and
Badminton courts are on campus. A student gymkhana building is also located in
the hostel compound. All the hostels are equipped with common rooms, facilities
for indoor games like Table tennis, Carrom etc.

Academics at IITP

IIT Patna has three schools –

(1) School of Engineering consisting of the following
Departments namely, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Civil &
Environmental Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering

(2) School of Basic Sciences consisting of Chemistry,
Physics, and Mathematics Departments

(3) School of Humanities consisting of Humanities & Social Science Department.

As of March 2014, IIT Patna has five hundred thirty three students enrolled in its B Tech programs, eighty five M.Tech students and one hundred forty Ph.D students.

IIT Patna has more than 150 research papers published in refereed international journals and more than 100 papers presented in national/international conferences during 2008-2011.

IIT Patna awards B.Tech in following disciples:

· Computer Science and Engineering

· Electrical Engineering

· Mechanical Engineering

· Civil Engineering

· Chemical Engineering

Admission to these programs is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

The M.tech degrees are awarded in following disciplines:

· Mathematics and Computing

· Nanotechnology

· Mechatronics

· Computer Science and Engineering

· Communication Systems Engineering

IIT Patna is the first IIT in the whole IIT system to start the M.tech program in Nanotechnology. Admission to M.tech is through GATE.

PhD degrees are awarded by all the departments. Admission is through a grueling interview process.

Extra-Curricular Activities

The annual freshers party Nebula helps to break the ice by welcoming the new entrants to the IITP family. IITP’s techno-cultural extravaganza is – AnweshaReverberance, the inter hall fest of IIT Patna held during Diwali.
