The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
Indian Institute of Technology,
established by an Act of Parliament in 1959. IIT
Kanpur was the first institute in India to offer Computer Science education. IIT Kanpur is located on the Grand Trunk Road, 15 km west of Kanpur City.
The land for the institute was
donated by the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 1960 and measures close
to 4.3 sq.km. You can find a large number of peacocks, migratory birds and nilgai on campus. The campus has 10 boys’ hostels, 2 girls’
hostels and one girls’ residence tower. The institute has around 2255
undergraduate students and 1476 postgraduate students, 309 faculty members and
more than 900 supporting staff. The Academic Area has the PK
Kelkar Library (formerly Central Library), Computer Centre, National Wind
Tunnel Facility and SIDBI Innovation and Incubation Centre. Faculty offices,
laboratories and administrative buildings are also on campus. All the buildings
are interconnected by a single corridor. The institute has its own airfield for flight testing and gliding.
A helicopter ferry service
connects IIT Kanpur to Lucknow. There are plans to connect it to New Delhi too.
The campus also has a
health Centre equipped with a 30-bed Indoor Ward, three schools, branches of
State Bank of India and Union Bank of India, Post Office & Telecom Centre, shopping
centers, outdoor Courts for Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Tennis and Indoor Courts
for Badminton, grounds for Hockey, Football and Cricket, Gymnastics and
Weight-Lifting Facilities and even an Olympic-size 8-lane Swimming Pool.
IIT Kanpur is set to open an
extension centre in Noida. The new campus will have an auditorium, seminar
halls to host national and international conferences and an International
Relations Office, along with a 7-storey guest house. Several short-term
management courses and refresher courses meant for distance learning will also
be offered at extension center.
Academics at IITK
offers the whole of degrees from the graduate to the doctoral levels.
IIT Kanpur offers the four-year B.Tech programs in Aerospace Engineering, Biological Sciences
and Bio-engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science
and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering and
Mechanical Engineering. The admission to these programs is through the JEE. IIT
Kanpur also offers B.S. Programs (4 yr.) in Pure and Applied Sciences
(Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in particular) and in Economics. A student
has the choice of opting for more than 50% of courses outside of the student’s
chosen department. Of these a student can opt for more than 25% of courses that
are in fields such as management and humanities. This allows for
flexibility in the course as per the student’s interest.
IITK offers M.Tech and Ph.D.
degrees. The institute also offers two year M.Sc. courses in areas of basic
sciences in which students are admitted through JAM exam. The institute also
offers M.Des, M.B.A. and M.Sc. Admissions to M.Tech is made once a year through Graduate Aptitude Test in
Engineering. M.Des accepts students based on their GATE and Common Entrance Exam for Design (CEED) scores. CAT is
the basis of admission to the M.B.A. program.
A team of students, faculty and
scientists of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had designed and built India’s first nano
satellite Jugnu, which was successfully launched in orbit
on 12 Oct 2011 by ISRO’s PSLV-C18. IIT Kanpur has set up the SIDBI Innovation and Incubation Centre (SIIC) provides a platform to business Start-ups to develop
their ideas into commercial products.

entrepreneurship festival. Udghosh is annual inter-college sports meet
held in September.
