An IIT was allocated for the state of Rajasthan in 2008. Jodhpur was picked as the location after considering other places like Ajmer, Bikaner, Jaipur etc.

In July 2008, the first academic session of IIT Jodhpur began at the IIT Kanpur campus, with 109 undergraduate students in the fields of Computer Science Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. In May 2010, classes of IIT Jodhpur were shifted from IIT Kanpur to the transit campus in MBM Engineering College under Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur. The academic area comprises the laboratories, library, lecture halls, computer rooms etc. The residential campus is self-sufficient with sports centres, 24 hr medical care. The hostels are wi-fi enabled.

IIT Jodhpur will shift in the forthcoming years to a sprawling residential campus covering 852 acres. The campus has been designed to be an example of sustainability and bio-remediation with an Energy Net Zero Strategy.

Academics at IITJ

IITJ offers B.Tech. programmes in the following

· Computer Science and Engineering

· Electrical Engineering

· Mechanical Engineering

· Biologically Inspired Systems Science

· System Science

Admission to the B.Tech programme is through the JEE.

Postgraduate and Ph.D programmes are structured around Centres of Excellence (CoE) of the institute. Sponsored research is planned in the areas of information, communication, energy sectors, systems science technology for health care, economics of policy reforms, and liberal arts and social sciences.

Blended B.Tech. Program is a unique technical industry immersion program to make IITJ Students and Faculty members live 24 weeks in the Industry spread over three summers, in addition to the 8-semester engagement in the Institute, offers the connect between classroom and real-life practice with the Industry.

Extra-Curricular Activities

IGNUS is the four day long techno-cultural festival organized by IITJ. Varchas is the inter-collegiate sports week. Spandan is the Intra-college cultural fest of the institute. The 3-day intra-college tech festival called Nimble gives a technical feeling to the students.
