Indian Institute of
Technology, Gandhinagar (also known as IITGN), established in 2008 is currently
located in Chandkheda, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. The first batch of students was
admitted in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical
Engineering. The permanent campus of IIT Gandhinagar is under construction on
the banks of Sabarmati near Palaj village. The
institute took possession of over 400 acres of land in August 2012 and expects
to move to the new campus by July 2015.

The institute will function as a fully
residential campus and will be constructed in phases. The campus will be run on
solar power. It is envisioned to be a pollution-free, green zone. The Institute
premises and the student hostels are Wi-Fi enabled. There are two hostels for the boys-one
inside the campus and the other hostel across the road in the building
complexes. There is a separate girls’ hostel within the campus for the
undergraduate women students. The campus has sports facilities that include a
football field, cricket, volleyball and basketball courts. Facilities for
indoor games such as badminton and table-tennis are also available. A modern
multi-purpose gym is available along with gym instructors.

(Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, and Materials
Science and Engineering), Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Earth
Sciences) and Humanities & Social Sciences (Cognitive Science, English,
Philosophy, Sociology, History, Language & Literature, Political Science,
Psychology, Social Epidemiology and Sociology, and other disciplines).

IIT Gandhinagar also offers an
option of a post-graduate diploma in engineering (PGDIIT), which is a one year
programme designed to be an intensive course-work based programme with no
thesis or research requirements. Currently
PGDIIT is offered in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Material
Science and Engineering.

117 students were
accepted for the B.Tech programme in 2012 while the number was 134 for the 2013
batch. A total of 150 (30 seats in each discipline) B.Tech seats are now available
at IITGN.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Amalthea the
technical summit is generally
organized by the students in October. Blithchron is the cultural festival of IIT Gandhinagar
that happens during in January, and typically lasts for two days. Jashn is a
three-day fun-filled intra-institute cultural fest with innovative, traditional
and exciting events/games, including art exhibition, photography movie-making
competitions and more. Hallabol is an all-night intra-institute sports Festival
at IITGN.  Sakar is a social initiative
by the students of to promote interest in Maths and Science among the school
girls of standard 6,7,8 and 9. The Earn-while-you-learn program allows the
students to be self-reliant and meet their own expenses.
