The Karnataka
Regional Engineering College (KREC)

was established in 1960 at Suratkal and it became The National Institute of Technology
Karnataka (NITK)
in
2002. NITK is set in a lush green 250
acre campus. The campus is a rare one as it is set by the shores of Arabian Sea, and has a private beach,
including a lighthouse.

The Institute is a completely residential campus with hostel facility for over 5000 students including separate blocks for girls. All the hostel rooms have been provided with high speed broadband and Wi-Fi internet connectivity. The accommodation is single-seater and 2/3 seater shared type. A separate hostel for the Post Graduate students is available. Independent messes of various types and cuisines are run in different hostels to suit the palettes of students. Moreover two night canteens run to cater the late night hunger pangs. There is a 24×7 medical centre with an ambulance facility located on campus. Branches of State Bank of India and Canara Bank with ATM facilities is on campus.

Life beyond the classroom

Engineer is a national level technical symposium and generally takes place around the last week of October and Incident is a cultural festival organised during the last week of February. There are clubs like Music, Debate, Dance, Drama, Star Gazing, Photography, Yoga, Art and Euphoria.
