1. Novak Djokovic won the 2014 Australia Open title

i. Novak Djokovic lifted the 2014 Australia Open
Men’s single title for the fifth time. He defeated Andy Murray in the final by 7-6(5),
6-7(4), 6-3 and 6-0.

ii. It was Djokovic’s eighth Grand Slam title. He won the first ever Grand Slam in
Australia back in 2008.

Note: Novak Djokovic, pronounced is a Serbian professional
tennis player who is currently ranked world No. 1 by the Association of Tennis
Professionals (ATP). He is considered to be one of the greatest tennis players
of all time. He became the sixth male player to win three Grand Slams in a
calendar year.

2. Reliance
partnered with SBI for Payment Bank Licence

i. Reliance Industries Limited
has applied for a payments bank licence.

ii. Reliance has
partnered with State Bank of India for payment bank licence. RIL will be the
promoter and State Bank of India will be the joint venture partner with equity
investment of up to 30 per cent.

iii. Both the
partners see formation of the Payments Bank as an opportunity to lead and co-create
an eco-system for accessible and affordable banking solutions.

iv. The Payments
Bank will influence SBI’s nationwide distribution network and risk management
capabilities along with the substantial investments made by Reliance Industries
in its retail and telecom businesses.

3. Aditya Birla Nuvo & Idea Cellular joins hands for
payments bank license

i. Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd. joins
hands with Idea Cellular a telecom company for a Payments Bank license.

ii. Aditya Birla Nuvo will
hold 51% while Idea will hold the balance 49% in Idea Payments Bank Ltd. which
would be the Payments Bank entity, if a license is granted.

iii. Idea Mobile Commerce
Services Ltd. (IMCSL), a wholly-owned unit of Idea, currently has a permit from
the RBI to issue Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPI Issuer). As per the Payments
Bank Guidelines, a PPI issuer cannot co-exist within the same promoter group.

iv. Hence, in case the
Payments Bank license is granted to Aditya Birla Nuvo, then the business
carried on by the PPI issuer will be folded into the Payments Bank, the
statement said.

4. Vakrangee applies for payments bank licence

i. Vakrangee Ltd has applied for
payments bank license with the Reserve Bank of India in the capacity of
corporate business correspondent.

ii. From being a
sub-contracted IT enabler in e-Governance projects, Vakrangee has transformed
into a retail house offering banking and financial services to reach the rural
population.

5. Arvind Kumar
Jain is a new DG of Police of UP

i. Arvind Kumar Jain appointed new Director
General of Police in Uttar Pradesh.

ii. He replaced Arun Kumar Gupta.

6. Mithileshwar
conferred with Shrilal Shukla Sahitya IFFCO Award 2014

i. Mithileshwar conferred with Shrilal Shukla Sahitya IFFCO Award 2014.

ii. The award is instituted by the fertilizer cooperative firm IFFCO in the memory of
the great Hindi novelist and writer Shrilal Shukla in the year 2011.

iii. Mithileshwar
is a Hindi novelist and belongs to Bhojpur district in Bihar.

iv. Some
of his novels include Prem na Badi Oopjai, Surang me Subah, Yah Ant Nahin,
Jhunia (1980), Yuddh Sthal (1981).

7. France lifted
World Handball title

i. France lifted the World Handball title by
defeating Qatar by 25-22 in the final.

ii. With this win France has won the World Championships
title for the fifth time, which is a record in handball game.

iii. France has won the first world title in 2011.

iv. Poland captured
the bronze medal by defeating Spain 29-28 after extra time

8. Leander Paes
and Martina Hingis lifted Australian Open Mixed Doubles Trophy

i. Leander Paes and Martina Hingis won the 2014
Australian Open Mixed Doubles Trophy.

ii. They defeated Daniel Nestor and Kristina
Mladenovic, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 in the final.

iii. This was Leander’s third Mixed Doubles title
at the Australian Open and 15th overall. For Martina, it was the ninth title at
Melbourne.

9. Australia beat
England in the Final, clinch Tri-Nation ODI Series

i. Australia defeated England by 112 runs to
clinch Tri-Nation ODI Series.

ii. Glenn
Maxwell is declared Man of the match, he scored 95 runs and took 4 wickets which
helped Australia to an emphatic win.

iii. Mitchell
Starc declared winner of the Man of the series.
