1. 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon executed

 (i) Yakub Memon, who was convicted for the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts was hanged to death in the Nagpur jail in Maharashtra early morning on July 30. 

(ii) The Maharashtra state government decided to hand over Memon’s body to his relatives for formal burial.

(iii) Memon, was the first and lone convict to be executed, out of the 100 in the 1993 Mumbai blast case. The death sentence of 11 others was commuted to life. 

2. Cabinet clears GST Bill amendment

(i) The Union Cabinet, head by PM Modi, cleared amendments to the goods and services tax (GST) bill to compensate states for revenue loss for a period of five years after the tax is levied, as per suggestions of the Rajya Sabha Select Committee.

(ii) The Cabinet has decided that levy of 1 percent tax over and above the GST rate by states as well as the ‘band’ rate would be finalised while framing the rules. 

(iii) The Cabinet also approved a new Consumer Protection Bill 2015, that replaces the existing law and proposes to set up a regulatory authority to curb unfair trade practices. 

3. Union Cabinet approves NIIF

(i) The Cabinet has approved setting up of the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) with an initial corpus of Rs.20,000 crore as proposed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the 2014-15 budget.

(ii) The objective of setting up NIIF is to boost infrastructure development in the country. The focus will be on providing equity support to non-banking financial companies and institutions set up to fund infrastructure projects across sectors. It may also extend debt support to commercially viable infrastructure projects. 

4. Clive Rice, former South African cricket skipper passes away 

(i) Clive Rice, who was South Africa’s first captain post the apartheid period passed away at 66. He was suffering from cancer. 

(ii) Rice was considered South Africa’s most talented all-rounder.

5. International Tiger Day observed on July 29th

(i) July 29 is celebrated as the International Tiger Day with a view to create awareness about the conservation of their natural habitats and extend support to several such conservation efforts.

(ii) It was first celebrated at Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in 2010 and since then has been promoted as International Tiger Day.
