1. India – Russia tie up for Kamov 226T choppers

(i) Taking ‘Make in India’ forward, Russia will ink a partnership with Reliance Defence for manufacture of Kamov 226T choppers locally. 

(ii) This is a part of the Rs. 6000 crore project for military helicopters. This joint venture is likely to be named ‘Reliance Helicopters’ 

(iii) Another option to partner with the defence public sector unit Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has also been kept open. The final approval will be based on Indian government’s decision.

2. SEBI reconstitutes the Takeover Panel 

(i) The Securities and Exchange board of India (SEBI) reconstituted the Takeover Panel, which is responsible for looking at the applications seeking exemption from the mandatory open offer that an acquirer needs to make to minority shareholders. 

(ii) The newly instituted Takeover Panel is to be chaired by Justice N K Sodhi, Former Chief Justice of the High Courts of Karnataka and Kerala and also the Former Presiding Officer of the Securities Appellate Tribunal.

3. India seals deal to acquire Ambedkar’s house in London

(i) India recently finalised the deal to acquire ownership of a three-storey bungalow where Dr B R Ambedkar lived as a student in 1920s in London and it is will soon be developed into a international memorial.

(ii) The deal was signed by Maharashtra’s Minister for Social Justice and Special Assistance Raj Kumar Badole. 

(iii) The house is to be used as educational and cultural centre. 

4. Govt. announces names of 98 smart cities 

(i) In keeping with the promise of developing smart cities, the government on 27th August 2015 declared names of 98 smart cities. 

(ii) All the states have atleast one or two smart cities. There are 12 cities from Uttar Pradesh, 12 from Tamil Nadu, 10 from Maharashtra, 7 from Madhya Pradesh, 3 each from Bihar and Andhra Pradesh.

5. Law commission report recommends abolition of death penalty except in terror cases

(i) A new report by the Law Commission of India, has recommended abolition of death penalty in all cases except when the convict is accused of orchestrating terror attacks. This is a reversal of the commission’s earlier stand. 

(ii) The commission is chaired by Justice (Retd) A P Shah and is likely to submit its report to the Supreme Court by August-end.

(iii) As per the report India is one of the 59 countries in the world that still has the death penalty. 

6. NTPC records highest single-day electricity generation on Aug 27 

(i) On 27 August 2015,  National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), India’s largest power generator recorded the highest single-day electricity generation of 733.12 million units.

(ii) As per the company’s statement, the record generation of 733.12 million units came from NTPC’s 18 coal-based power plants, 7 gas-based units and 8 solar and hydro power stations.

(iii) During financial year 2014-15, NTPC contributed 25 per cent of total electricity generated in India.

7. Usain Bolt bags gold in 200 m sprint; defeats Gatlin

(i) The Jamaican runner, Usain Bolt won the 200 meters sprint at the World Athletics Championship 2015 in a stunning performance. 

(ii) This is his 10th Gold medal in World Championships in 200 m sprint. So far in the Beijing games, he has won two gold medals– 100 m and 200 m.
