World Book Day is being observed today

i. The day is celebrated to encourage the people, in particular the youth, to discover the pleasure of reading.

ii. World Book Day is an occasion to celebrate the importance of books in our life. The day is organised by the UNESCO to promote reading habits in people, especially in the youth.

iii. Even in the age of technology and social networking , books continue to acquire a significant place in our life. The joy of reading a book by your favourite author cannot be replaced by any other medium.

iv. UNESCO decided to celebrate 23rd of April as world book day as this day marks the death anniversary of both William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes.

v. Each year, UNESCO and the international organizations representing the three major sectors of the book industry – publishers, booksellers and libraries, select the World Book Capital for a one-year period, effective 23 April each year.

2. 16 yr new age of juveniles for heinous crimes, approved by Govt.

i. The government has approved lowering of age of juveniles from eighteen to sixteen years for heinous crimes.

ii. The cabinet also approved to introduce Amendment to the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill, 2014. This amendment will propose and add special provisions to tackle heinous offences like murder and rape committed by juveniles in the age group of 16-18 years.

iii. The proposed bill will amend the Juvenile Justice Act, 2000. The parent Act clearly defines and classifies offences as serious, petty and heinous and defines differentiated processes for each classified category.

3. E-Samiksha, an online monitoring mechanism, launched by Indian Railways

i. Indian Railways has launched an online monitoring mechanism ‘E – Samiksha” which aims aims at monitoring implementation of various ongoing projects of Indian Railways on real-time basis including Rail Budget proposals.

ii. It was launched by Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in New Delhi. It is designed by National Informatics Centre (NIC). It has been developed to make it a highly interactive web-based, user-friendly and customised system.

iii. It will be used to monitor budget-related projects and also for monitoring the infrastructure target and board meeting follow-up. Currently, it is being used by Cabinet Secretariat, Prime Minister’s Office and other Ministries for monitoring progress implementation of various programmes and follow-up of meetings.

4. Dadasaheb Phalke Film Foundation Award 2015 conferred on Sharukh Khan 

i. Dadasaheb Phalke Film Foundation Award 2015 has been conferred on bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, for his performance in the movie Happy New Year.

ii. Actor Rajkummar Rao won the prestigious award for his performance in the critically acclaimed film Citylights, which was released in 2014.
iii. Actress Huma Qureshi bagged an award for her memorable performance in the movie Dedh Ishiqya.
iv. Bollywood actors Shreyas Talpade, Tiger Shroff, actress Jaya Prada, singer Udit Narayan and Pankaj Udhas were also felicitated with the award.
v. Several television celebrities were also conferred with the award including actors Rubina Dilaik, comedian Bharti Singh and actor Ravi Dubey.

5. Zimbabwe to be first Test team to tour Pakistan since 2009

i. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that Zimbabwe will be the
first Test team to tour Pakistan since 2009.

ii. No Test team has toured Pakistan since March, 2009 when militants
attacked the Sri Lankan team in Lahore

iii. The schedule of the ODI series is yet to be confirmed. It could be
either a five or three-match ODI series and two Twenty-20 matches.
