1. World Suicide Prevention Day observed

(i) Every year on September 10, the International Association for Suicide prevention (IASP) in collaboration with World Health Organisation (WHO) and World Federation for Mental Health hosts World Suicide Prevention Day. 

(ii) This year’s theme is ‘Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives.’

2. Hungary opines to declare state of crisis

(i) On September 10, Hungary’s Interior Ministry reported that it has proposed declaration of a “state of crisis due to mass migration” as of Sept. 15 based on the bills passed last week. 

(ii) This proposal will be the first issue to be taken by the Hungarian government meeting on September 15.

(iii) More than 160,000 migrants have reportedly entered Hungary over this year and are mainly heading to richer economies in the EU such as Germany.

3. UNEP releases the Global Waste Management Outlook 2015

(i) The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for the first time on September 7, 2015 released the Global Waste Management Outlook – a first-of-its-kind report on waste management at the global level. 

(ii) The study was jointly prepared by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA).

(iii) The study aimed at generating awareness among governments and the public in general about different sources of wastes, assessing its impact on the environment, health and finding solutions to address the same. 

4. Remains of hitherto unknown human species discovered in South Africa

(i) Recently 15 bodies of previously unknown human species were found in a cave in South Africa. The discovery has been acknowledged as a major revolution in

evolution research. 

(ii) The newly found species have been named Homo Naledi, after the Rising Star Cave where the bones were found.

(iii) Homo Naledi stands approximately at 1.5 m and weigh about 45 kilos. 

5.  Scottish scientists produce biofuel from whisky residues

(i) In a first, scientists in Scotland have developed a way to produce biofuel from the residue of whisky, which is capable of powering cars. 

(ii) Edinburgh-based company Celtic Renewables has been awarded £11

million, which will be used to build a new production facility after the first samples of bio-

butanol from by-products of whisky fermentation have been manufactured. 

(iii) The usage of biofuel will reduce dependency on traditional fuels, thereby lowering greenhouse gas

emissions.

6. INS Vajrakosh recently commissioned  in Indian Navy

(i) On September 9, Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, commissioned INS ‘Vajrakosh’,

a naval station at Karwar, Karnataka.

(ii) Together with the INS Kadamba, 20 km away, INS

Vajrakosh spreads out about 1000 acres and becomes the largest naval base east of the

Suez Canal.

(iii) Vajrakosh which loosely translates to ‘Thunder Chest’  was constructed as the second phase of project seabird, which was initiated in 1985.

7. Andhra Bank launches 2600th branch and 3000th ATM 

(i) On September 11, Andhra Bank launched its 2600th branch and 3000th ATM at Yadgirigutta

and Secunderabad respectively.

(ii) The bank has presence across 26 states and three Union

Territories with 43% of the branches are in semi-urban/rural areas. 231 branches in

unbanked rural centres.

(iii) Managing Director and CEO Satish Kumar Kalra e-launched the

establishments.

8. Sun Edison Inc signs MoU with Tamil Nadu to develop 2GW of wind and solar energy 

(i) On September 9, US-based renewable energy firm SunEdison, signed a

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to develop

2 gigawatts (GW) of wind and solar power in the state in the next 5 years.

(ii) This is

part of the company’s bigger plan to develop 15.2 GW of renewable energy in India

by 2022.

9. Murder convicts in Delhi and J&K more likely to be sentenced to death – NCRB study

(i) As per the National Crime Record Bureau’s latest study called ‘Hanging in Balance:

Arbitrariness in Death Penalty Adjudication in India’, a murder convict in Jammu and

Kashmir and Delhi has a high probability of being given the death sentence vis-à-vis any

other state.

(ii) While in J & K a person convicted of murder is 6.8 times more likely to have the

noose around his/her neck, in Delhi the probability is six times more than the national

average.

10. Haryana honours Emergency protesters 

(i) In a first, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced the decision to honour

people who agitated against the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi during 1975-77, and

were consequently harassed.

(ii) The protesters are entitled to benefits like free travel in all state roadways buses and 75%

discount on state-run Volvo buses, starting October 2.

(iii) The benefits will also be extended to

the protestors’ spouses or in case the latter is dead, the benefit of free travel in state buses

can be availed by an aide.

11. Tata Motors’ Jamshedpur plant honoured for energy efficiency

(i) In early September 2015, India’s leading automobile company Tata

Motors Limited’s Jamshedpur plant was acknowledged as ‘the excellent energy efficient unit’

at the 16th National Award for Excellence in Energy Management, 2015.

(ii) This award was

conferred for their constant commitment to improve energy efficiency, implement various

energy conservation projects and reduce in carbon emissions.

12. Abitha Mary and Anamika Das bag bronze in medals

(i) On 8th September, Indian athlete Abitha Mary Manuel won a bronze medal at the

800 m race event on the final day of the Fifth Commonwealth Youth Games in

Apia, Samoa.

(ii)  Abitha Manuel, a Keralite, clocked 2:07:33, her best performance, to

finish third in the 800-metre finals. Amy Harding-Delooze from Australia won the gold medal in 2:06.84 and Carys McAulay from Scotland bagged silver in 2:07.05.

(iii) Anamika Das, Indian shot put athlete from Uttar Pradesh, got

India another bronze medal when she flung the 3-kg iron ball to a distance of 15.03

m, her best so far.

13. 2015 US Open results

(i) On September 11, 2015, the Indo-Swiss pair Leander Paes and Martina Hingis

defeated the American pair Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sam Querrey 6-4, 3-6, 10-

7 at the 2015 US Open finals held in New York.

(ii) With this, Paes-Hingis became the

first to win three major Grand Slam titles in a single year since Marty Riessen and

Margaret Court achieved the feat in 1969.

(iii) On September 12, 2015, Italy’s Flavia Pennetta won the 2015 US Open women’s

singles title by defeating countrywoman Roberta Vinci 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 in the finals. 

(iv) At 33, Pennetta became the oldest first-time Grand Slam

women’s champion in the Open era and is the second Italian woman to win a

Grand Slam.

(v) Serbian top seed Novak Djokovic won the 2015 US open men’s single’s title

defeating Roger Federer 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. This is Djokovic’s first US Open victory

since 2011 and his third Grand Slam title of the season after the Australian Open

and Wimbledon.

14. Flyod Mayweather Jr. defeats Berto in his last match 

(i) Floyd Mayweather Jr. won his final fight as a professional boxer against Andre

Berto in Las Vegas, US on September 13, 2015.

(ii) He won the match 49-0 earned a prestigious place among several other great boxers.
