Crescita, the flagship event of BIM Trichy, took place at the Accord Metropolitan, Chennai on November 19-20. The theme of Crescita 2011 was Praachamanyu looking back to move forward. As the global economy braces itself for yet another meltdown, it becomes very essential to learn from our mistakes. The future offers us limitless possibilities. But, we need to have a watchful eye towards this future. We need to carefully tread this path, while ensuring we dont overlook what our past taught us.

Crescita 2011 had guest speakers from all walks of management. The two-day event began with Dr Anup K Pujari, Director General of Foreign Trade, giving an insightful speech about the Human Development Index and the kind of support any first time trader would get in todays environment. S Krishnan, Chairman, Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board who graced the occasion, spoke about the current scenario prevalent in the Labour Market in our country.

The event also played host to Y Rama Rao, Managing Director & CEO, Spark Capital, who spoke on General Management. He stressed the need for future business leaders to have a far sighted approach in their endeavours. The event, had its share of patrons from the media industry as well. Raghuvir Srinivasan, Deputy Editor, Business line, graced the occasion with his perspectives on how media has evolved over time and reiterated that throughout this change, the objective of media continued to remain the same Reporting to the world about the world without any compromise!. while talking about what the future holds for managers in his field, he pointed out the shifting trends on how web media is slowly replacing the print media as the preferred resource for daily news among general public.

One of the highlights of Crescita, carried across over the years is The Corporate Quiz conducted by Barry OBrien, one of the countrys leading quiz masters. This year, 34 teams from various corporate houses participated in the event from which six teams were shortlisted to proceed to the finals comprising 8 rounds. At the end of an enjoyable and enriching two hours, Team Broke and Brokers emerged winners and were awarded Rs 25,000, while the Team from Infosys took the second spot winning a cash prize of Rs 15000.

The second day of the event was witness to panel discussions on Economics and Human Resources. The discussion on economics covered a wide range of issues starting from the curent inflationary problems to inclusive growth and beyond. The eminent speakers in this panel included Dr Venkatesh Athreya from MS Swaminathan Research foundation, Dr M Ramachandran, Head of dept. of Economics, Pondicherry University and Manas Ranjan Das, AGM (Economist), State Bank of India Staff College, Hyderabad.

The HR panel discussion, later in the day, saw the likes of Dr K SaiPrasanna, CFO of Mafoi Randstad, Gerard Selvam Augustine, Associate Director – Human Resouces, from Computer Science Corporation and R Kumar an Independent Consultant, sharing their views on What ails HR?.

One of the highlights of Crescita 2011 was the speech given by Mr Ramakrishnan K, President – Marketing, Cafe Coffee Day on Challenging old conventions. He stressed on the need to question conventional wisdom and take our learnings from it. He went on to explain how CCD challenged these conventions to expand beyond the taditional markets and serve beyond the regular customers. He related how customer engagement plays a key role in creating brand loyalty.

One of the institutes, most decorated alumni, A Balasubramanian, Senior Director Project Finance, IDFC took stage for the final speakers session with his speech on the investment strategy of India. He spoke about the current financial issues that our country is facing, the cushioning it enjoys in times of global financial meltdowns and how far it can hold us safe. Mr Balasubramanian compared the countrys economy to Marilyn Monroe, quoting one of her very famous lines

Im selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you cant handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell dont deserve me at my best.

The event rounded off with the valedictory session presided by Dr K Meena , Vice Chancellor, Bharathidasan University and chaired by N Balabaskar, Director, BIM, Trichy. Students who had excelled in various competitions across ducational institutions were honoured on this occasion. The event culminated with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr S Sundar, Placement Chairman, BIM and the event chairman for Crescita 2011.
