The Union Public Service Commission conducts the Central Police Force Examination every year to recruit Assistant Commandments (Group A) in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). The CAPF comprise the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).These five forces (collectively referred to as Central Armed Police Forces) come under the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

Let us understand the CAPF exam better.

Eligibility criteria:

(a) Both men and women are eligible for CISF and CRPF. For SSB, BSF and ITBP, only men are eligible.

(b) Minimum educational qualifications required: graduation (or equivalent) from a recognised university

(c) Candidates appearing for their degree exam are also allowed to appear for the exam.

Age limit:

Candidates for the CAPF exam must be between 20-25 years old as on 1st August of the year of examination.

The upper age limit prescribed above (i.e. 25 years) is relaxed by three years and five years for candidates belonging to OBC and SC/ST categories respectively.

Scheme of Examination:

The CAPF examination consists of three stages:

I   Written Examination 

The written examination has two papers:

Paper 1: General Ability and Intelligence (Objective Type)               250 Marks

Paper 2: Essay, Precis writing and comprehension (Essay Type)       150 Marks

Note: There will be minimum qualifying marks for Paper 1 and 2 set by the commission. Only those who qualify in Paper 1 will be eligible to give paper 2.

II  Physical standard, Physical efficiency and Medical standards Test 

Candidates who clear the written examination would be summoned for the next stage, i.e. Physical and Medical Standards Test.

III Interview and Personality Test

Candidates who clear the Physical standard, Physical efficiency and Medical standards Test would be called for an Interview/ Personality Test conducted by the UPSC.

The Interview and Personality test carries 150 Marks. Candidates who are short-listed for the Interview/ Personality Test would be given a Detailed Application form wherein they would have to indicate their preference for particular forces.

The final Merit list would be drawn on the basis of the total marks obtained by candidates in the written exams and the Interview/Personality test.
