TIE meet held at MICA

The Tie meet at MICA held on March 21, 2010 at MICA took off with a welcome note extended by the students of the EDC batch to eminent guests from TiE Mumbai, TiE Ahmedabad as well as TiE student representatives. The aim of the event was to encourage entrepreneurs through mentorship network established by TIE. Among other people, also present were the Director of MICA Prof Ashok Ranchhod, the chairperson of MICAs Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) Professor G R Jain, faculty members, and other staff and students from the Post Graduate Programme in Entrepreneurship in Media & Communications (PGPEMC) program.

Professor Jain began proceedings by highlighting how the course was completely different from other existing courses with the focus being on creation of new ideas and transforming the same into successful business ventures. He threw light upon the need for mentoring students and co creation of ideas. Jay Ruparel, COO of Azure Technologies, shared his views on how time has allowed the aura of scepticism to vanish from the domain of entrepreneurship. Manek Singh, Executive Director, TiE Mumbai stated how TiE applauded each entrepreneurial effort and their various tie ups in India to promote entrpreneurship over the years. The session continued with students presenting over 25 unique ideas to mentors pertaining to different sectors and industries. This only proved the mettle the students possessed as well as their hunger to succeed. Various mentors then chose their mentees who were then scheduled for a one-to-one discussion to ensure personal attention.

All the ideas of these budding entrepreneurs were presented to their respective mentors who in turn provided valuable inputs and their very own personal experiences during their entrepreneurial journey. This encouraging and enriching session provided valuable support and guidance to the students who soaked up everything that came their way. The meet ended on a promising note where mentors showed eagerness to come back and nurture the students ideas till the end of the show.

IIM Lucknows campaign starts off Earth Hour Week in Lucknow

Earth Hour is part of the World Wildlife Funds (WWF) initiative that began in Sydney in 2007 as a one-city campaign when over two million people switched off their lights for an hour to convey their support for action on climate change. In 2008 the campaign went global with over 50 million people in 371 cities across 35 countries taking part. In 2009 more than 4,000 cities and towns, 20,000 companies, 8,000 schools, 5,500 organizations in 88 countries participated in Earth Hour, which reached nearly one billion people This year Chief Minister of Delhi Smt Sheila Dixit and Abhishek Bachchan, Brand Ambassador for WWF officially launched the Earth Hour Campaign on 10th March 2010.

Taking the concept forward Interest Group in Food and Agri-Business (IGFAB) , IIM Lucknow, conducted an awareness campaign about saving electricity in association with World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This is the first time earth hour campaign is being celebrated in Lucknow.

The event started by switching off all the public lights at 7:30 pm for 15 minutes on 21st March, 2010 throughout the campus. This was then followed by a candle light march in which students, staff and faculty members actively participated. They took an oath to protect Mother Earth, to reduce pollution, and conserve energy. Simultaneously IGFAB also conducted an event at the well known shopping mall, Saharaganj. The event mainly included a video presentation to sensitize the people about the need to save electricity so as to prevent global warming and its disastrous effects on human life.

NITIE wins Lessons in Marketing Excellence

National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai, won ‘Lessons in Marketing Excellence’, the inter-college marketing case-study competition held under the aegis of Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (HUL) and CNBC-TV18 on March 20, 2010. The winning team Front Runners from NITIE, comprising of Jeeta Das, Abhijit Kamra and Jitin Sharma, first-year students of PGDIM course.The competitors included the 6 IIMs (ABCLIK), ISB Hyderabad, XLRI Jamshedpur, FMS (Delhi University), SP Jain Mumbai and JBIMS Mumbai at the Grand Finale held yesterday at Taj Colaba, Mumbai and attended by noted industry stalwarts and dignitaries.

The competition consisted of 3 highly competitive rounds and only the best 12 management institutes of the country were invited to participate. The first round was an intra-college selection round, where different B Schools were given live case studies from different industrial sectors. In the next round, a live case study on Knorr soups and Ready-to-Cook category was organized by HUL. The two teams from NITIE and IIM Ahmedabad were declared winners of this round, where after they faced each other at the Grand Finale. The final round focused on a case study concerning the recently finalized Govt.of India initiative, Unique Identification Number (UID).Nandan Nilekani, Chairman, UIDAI, Govt.of India and former chairman, Infosys Technologies was present to grace the occasion. Other dignitaries present in the audience included noted ad-filmmaker, Prahlad Kakkar, Marten Pieters, Global Head, Vodaphone, Kishore Biyani, CEO, Future Group and CNBC head-honcho, Anuradha Sengupta. The jury of the Finale included eminent personalities such as Rama Bijapurkar (thought leader on market strategy and author of the well-received book, ‘We are like that only – Understanding the Logic of Consumer India’), R Balakrishnan (Executive Creative Director, Lowe), Shrijeet Mishra (Executive Director, HUL Foods), Gopal Vittal (Executive Director, HUL) and Sanjay Pugalia (Editor, TV 1.

IIM Indore students participate in Innovative Executive Leadership Certificate Program at Pittsburgh University

Thirty nine executive students from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Indore completed the inaugural leadership program offered by the Center for Executive Education (CEE) of the University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business. The intensive curriculum included faculty presentations, company tours, and talks by business leaders.

CEE’s Executive Leadership Program for IIM Indore was an intense, two-week immersion that explored topics of creativity, global business strategies, corporate social responsibility, leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation, and more. The participants visited the research and development facilities of PPG Industries and the UPMC Center for Connected Medicine and heard high-level speakers from other major organizations. Panel discussions addressed the Brazilian and Chinese markets and their relationship to India, and the group explored six widely different industries, including integrated healthcare, transportation, and aerospace.

“For the last year and a half we have been exploring initiatives in Asia to complement the executive education programs that we offer in Pittsburgh, Brazil, and the Czech Republic,” said Anne Nemer, assistant dean and executive director of Executive MBA Programs and Executive Education in the Katz School. “India is the largest democracy in the world with a diverse and creative population. It is very exciting to see this partnership develop between two great institutions, the University of Pittsburgh and IIM Indore.”

Approximately one-third of the EPGP IIM Indore participants that visited Pittsburgh were from an information technology background while other participants included professionals from the marketing, banking, engineering, military, and even medical fields. The EPGP participants are experienced professionals with an average of nine years in their profession and a range of five to seventeen years experience.

Participants were particularly impressed with the insights they got from the world renowned faculty, and from creativity and leadership sessions which added tremendous value to participants understanding of different cultures, countries and cross-organizational influences.

The University of Pittsburgh also organized industry visits and interaction sessions with top business leaders. The visits to companies in various industries were very helpful to participants in getting firsthand American industry experience.

Convocation ceremonies held at IIM Lucknow and XIMB

IIM Lucknow and XIMB celebrated their convocation ceremonies recently. IIM Lucknow conferred diplomas to 298 students from the 24th batch of Post Graduate Programme in Management, 18 students from the 5th batch of Post Graduate Programme in Agri-business Management, and 4 students from the Fellow Programme on March 15, 2010. Meleveetil Damodaran, Ex-Chairman, SEBI was the Chief Guest on the occasion and delivered the Convocation Address. At XIMB, 119 students from the PGDM (full time), 46 students from PGDM (Part Time) and 56 students from the PGDM (Rural Management) program were awarded diplomas. The chief guest for the ceremony was R. Seshasayee, Managing Director, Ashok Leyland Limited.
