The Annual Festival of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Guwahati, Seismech: Ascendeta Infinitum, was held on April 8-10, 2016. The festival was organised by the Mechanical Engineering Student Association (MESA).

Seismech aims to bring learning in our lives. Over the years, the festival has helped promote ideas, innovations and healthy interactions between the bright young minds and knowledgeable, experienced minds, and acted as a platform for knowledge sharing, exchanging information and problem solving for the Mechanical Engineering community.

This year around, the three-day-long festival provided ample learning to the participants, who got real-time exposure, and an opportunity to interact with people from different industries, start-ups, and prestigious institutions of the country.

In its third edition this year, various events such as Lecture Series, Workshops, Case Studies, Quizzes, Poster Presentation and other competitions were organised to keep the students entertained and engaged.

The Lecture Series played host to eminent academicians such as Prof Sreerup Raychaudhuri (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai) and Prof AW Date (IIT Bombay) who shared their knowledge, interacted with students and helped them understand how things work on a large scale. The other prominent names, who featured in this year’s Lecture Series, included IITG’s alumni who have successfully launched start-ups. They shared their tips and tricks with budding entrepreneurs.

The workshops at the festival gave a hands-on learning experience to students. The workshops were based on Vehicle Reconstruction, RC Aircraft Design and Fabrication and MATLAB. In the Poster Presentation competition, participants designed posters related to any facet of Mechanical Engineering, which included R&D, Facility Design, Process Development, Manufacturing, Environment, and Technology. The winners in various competitions received an opportunity to do their internship at IIT Guwahati.

Another noteworthy social initiative of Seismech is Gaon Chalo.  As part of this, IIT-G students work with school-going children from rural areas, guiding and inspiring them to study and explore engineering as a career in future.
