• P V Sindhu youngest Indian to win at Olympics
    • Badminton player P V Sindhu made history by being youngest Indian sportsperson to win a medal at the quadrennial Olympics. Sindhu won the Silver medal in women’s singles badminton event at Rio Olympics 2016.
    • She is also the first women to win a Silver in Badminton events at Olympics. Saina Nehwal won a Bronze medal at London Olypmics in 2012.
    • Sindhu is the fourth Indian to win a silver at the Olympics after shooters Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (2004, Athens) and Vijay Kumar (2012, London) and wrestler Sushil Kumar (2012, London).
    • Moreover, she became the fifth woman player from India to win a medal in Olympics.
  • August 19 observed as World Humanitarian Day 
    • The theme this year is One Humanity.
    • It is observed to honour a resolution passed by United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
    • It is dedicated to recognize humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes.
    • It is also pays homage to a 2003 airstrike in Iraq which killed UN Special Representative to Iraq, Sérgio Vieira de Mello and 21 of his colleagues. 
  • Sangeet Marthand Ustad Chand Khan Lifetime Achievement Award for Pandit Shivkumar Sharma
    • Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma has been awarded Ustad Chand Khan Lifetime Achievement Award by the Delhi Gharana.
    • Pandit Shivkumar Sharma is an exponent of the Santoor, a string instrument and has its origins in Kashmir.
    • Pandit Sharma started his career as a musician at the All India Radio (AIR), which helped make the instrument popular among people at large.
    • The Delhi Gharana to which Ustad Chand Khan belongs is associated with Amir Khusro.   
  • Global Innovation Index 2016- India ranks 66th
    • India has made a jump of 15 places from rank 81 in 2015 to 66 in 2016
    • Global innovation Index is released by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) andFrance based interantional business school INSEAD.
    • Switzerland ranks number one in the list, India is placed fourth among BRICS countries after China, Russia and South Africa.
    • the rankings were started in 2007. Countries are marked on the basis of 80 parameters.
  • Indian National Defence University (INDU) to be established at Gurugram, draft bill in public domain
    • It will be a world class institution for higher defence studies.
    • INDU seeks to address challenges emanating from strategic environment driven by political, social and economic factors which affect character of warfare and security. 
    • These challenges can be addressed through education of military officers to think and act independently of formulaic guidelines.
    • INDU will augment existing professional military education (PME) and enhance jointness among different services.
