GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) committee has added Gorakhpur as a new test centre in its tentative list of 184 examination cities. These 185 examination cities are divided on the basis of the eight Zonal GATE offices, which includes the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Roorkee.
IIT Kanpur zone has only 11 cities for examination centres in their zone, including the new centre at Gorakhpur. IIT Madras zone has a total of 39 cities for examination centres, highest of all the eight zones/sectors.
GATE is an online computer based examination, comprising of multiple choice and numerical answer questions.
The overall number of centres for GATE 2017 examination has been reduced from 192 to 184 in India. However, the exam is also going international this year, and there will be additional international examination centres in the following countries; Abu Dhabi / Dubai (UAE), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Colombo (Sri Lanka), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Kathmandu (Nepal), Singapore.
GATE started in India in 1984, for post-graduate admissions, and screening for entry-level jobs at Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). It is jointly conducted by IITs and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
