Hi Shuklakn,
Really eager to know what made you choose NUS over ISB.
(btw, I have accepted my ISB admit).

Got a ding. Shocking. NUS was among the dream ones and I had applied only to NUS and ISB.
Both dings and worse, without even interviews. Am clueless.

Good and All the best for your stint at ISB.
Why NUS? Lately, I've been asked this question so many times that I can recite the answer even if someone wakes me up at 3am in night.
Well, every person's resume and aspirations would be different, so really speaking the choice depends on person to person. Having said that, I exhort you (and everyone who read this post) to not evaluate the reasoning that I've mentioned for myself in your own context. This reasoning is valid, and only valid, for shuklakn.
1. My resume/experience lacks International Exposure/Experience. And all the top shots, with whom I've discussed that how important the International Exposure role helps in a job, have strongly suggested to have it. I would prefer NUS because it is in the system there that I would be searching for a job in APAC region (SIngapore is most likely) once I graduate from NUS. If my stars are unlucky, only then I would be heading back to India. In ISB, the probability of getting a foreign placement next year is quite low. And once you are in a job, you need to fight your manager, company policy and market condition to get placed abroad. Given the scenario, I'll prefer fighting immediately after the job, hence NUS.
2. How easy is it to get a job in another stream (different from what you are in right now) in ISB? I guess, at this point in time, very less. And ISB's 1 year course makes it more difficult. And 1 year is actually not 1 year. Strictly speaking, how many extra electives would one take till the placement season (nbd/trouble) starts? May be 5 or 6. Can I compete with numerous others who already have experience in the stream I want to get in? Again, the probablity is quite low. ISB is good when the demand is high. Unfortunately, thats not the case right now (and with high probablity, it will not be high next year as well). With NUS's 17 months course, I, at least, have a chance to do an internship and study more electives to fight for a job in a stream I want to get into.
3. 560. Scary in current circumstances !!!!
4. Opportunity cost. Not too much !!!
5. Graduation time. NUS: Jan 2011 (prg starts in August), ISB: April 2010 prg starts in April). I would like to spend more time studying given that opportunity cost is not too much.
6. Brand Name. Both are good in their respective countries. And once you are in a job for 4-5 years, it does not really matter much from which college have you done your MBA. Further, I've a good undergraduate degree, I hope it wont be a much trouble for me to find a job in India with NUS MBA.
Having said this, I sincerely believe that my choice would have been different 1 year before or after the current year.
Thanks,
|

That's a truly fantastic analysis. Very practical. Frankly, I too have the same views and irrespective of last year / next year, I would always chose NUS over ISB for the same reasons outlined. ISB is super at marketing its own brand and so it figures at top 15 in FT. That way even HKUST figures at # 17. So IMHO FT Rankings are crap. I use FT just to have a view of 100 best schools globally. I appreciate your decision of selecting NUS over ISB. Congratulations!
