CAT Query Center- FAQs regarding CAT 2009 online and other Exams - 19-06-2009, 10:51 AM

Many a times on the forum, I have come across CAT newbies repeatedly asking if their XX Percentage in their 10th Standard or in their 12th Standard is sufficient/insufficient for them to be able to get an Admission into a *Good* B-School or if they will be able to get through CAT of they start preparing at a particular Point in Time.

This Thread plans to be a one-stop Solution to all those Questions. Here, I will answer a few FAQs regarding CAT and other B-Schools accepting CAT scores.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1: Hi! I am XYZ from ABC city. Where can I find help regarding my CAT preparation on this forum?? (Believe me, I have seen THREADS named like “Hi!” and “Can some-one guide me?”)

Ans.: Hey!! Welcome to PaGaLGuY.Com. Please find below, a list of all the Threads you might find helpful in your preparation. There may be many more threads besides these; you can “SEARCH” more when you become more familiar with the forums

If you are Down and Out and need some motivation-
http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/cat-an...h-awaited.html ([Free Personalized Ebook] The much awaited 'All I Wanted to Speak About CAT' Ebook)

Q2: Is Joining a CAT coaching institute necessary for cracking the CAT?

Ans. Well, it really depends on a number of variables like "If you can push yourselves to study on your own" or "like a typical techie (no offence meant) you need constant supervision and someone honking behind you pushing you to move". It also depends on the fact that you are either comfortable studying alone or are better off in a group.

However, More often than not, working junta opts for weekend batches or maybe late night batches because that atleast helps them strangle some hours out of their busy schedule for CAT preparation and maybe help them get into the studying mode.

Q3: I am from XYZ city. Can you tell me which Coaching Institute to Join for CAT preparation??

Ans.: I really don’t think you should be asking this question here on the forum. You should infact be out there making rounds to all the 3 (or more) known coaching centers in your city/area, asking them various questions like how experienced is your faculty?, what is the batch size?, Why do you think your coaching institute is better than the others in the business?. Believe me it’s an important decision and a rather personal one too. You wouldn’t want to blame/give credit to someone else, later on, would you? You don’t have to join a particular institute just because many people are joining it. History is fraught with incidents of mass suicide.

Q4: I have got XX% marks in my 10th/12th/Graduation. Will I be able to get Admission in “ABC” B-School?

Ans.: Well, Seriously, There are a few B-Schools that DO take into consideration the marks you have been getting throughout your student life. Personally, I’d say that’s irrational. If CAT is really an Aptitude exam, why drift away. (Yeaa Yeaa, I am also a sufferer of these very Policies). However every B School has some weightage for the marks you obtain in School and college, here’s a List of the colleges that give a more than required weightage to School/Grad scores:
  • IIM Ahmedabad (They use some weird formula giving weightages to various things including your school and grad marks)
  • IIM Bangalore (Same as IIM A, they also use a weird formula {though the weightages are different})
  • IIM Shillong (Minimum 80% marks in School and Graduation)
  • S.P. Jain Institute of Management Research
This said, history says that B-Schools are looking for batches with more and more variety. And their selection criteria are quite dynamic. You never know, you might just be what they want!!!

P.S. You can go through 'This (Shortlisting Criteria of B-Schools - A Repository)' thread to know more about the shortlisting criterias of various B Schools.

P.P.S. You need atleast 50% marks in your graduation to be eligible to sit for CAT and other exams.

Q5: I am a fresher, do I stand any chance in the IIMs??

Ans.: YES. You stand as much chance as anyone with 5 years of work experience does of getting into IIMs. No IIM has ever had a 100% working junta in a batch. Every B School looks to have a mix of various kinds of people in their batches. No IIM in my view is ‘Fresher Averse’. If you have it in you, you will get there regardless of how much work experience you have.

And believe me; getting admitted into an IIM is much more than just about your marks and your work profile. It’s about who YOU are. No one would want a person who has been a 90%ager throughout, has a work experience of 2-3 years but who does not know what happening around him. The zeal to gain more and more knowledge is what they want. Having a ‘Winning Attitude’ is half the battle won and half the MBA done!! (THIS IS STRICTLY A PERSONAL OPINION)

re: CAT Query Center- FAQs regarding CAT 2009 online and other Exams - 19-06-2009, 11:01 AM

(Continued from the previous post)

Q6: Can anyone help me find the E-book version of the xyz institutes’ CAT prep material??

Ans.: Psssst. These people at pagalguy.com take those silly copyrights and IPRs seriously. They strongly discourage using this forum for exchange of ANY copyrighted material . I suggest you do not ask for it here and they would be thankful to you if you don’t post any, either. .
P.S. You have better chances of winning the weekly draw in a lottery than finding a Soft Copy of any insti’s CAT prep material.

Q7: Which books apart from the regular study material can I opt for, for extra practice?
Ans.: There are many books available in the markets that provide you with a basic understanding of concepts of Quants for CAT and which provide many questions for additional practice. Some of these are:

1. Quantitative Aptitude for CAT by Arun Sharma- Good for Beginners. Has various levels of questions neatly differentiated.

2. Trishna (a TIME release) - Very well explained Basics. Quite helpful in laying the foundation for your Quantitative aptitude.

3. Sarvesh Kumar- Very Extensive. Covers all the possible fundas and has a number of questions for practice. Good difficulty level. Quite heavy though.

4. Nishit Sinha- Beginners Beware!!! No Detailed Solutions. Can throw your confidence into the bin. VERY good however, for advanced practice.

Q8: Does my city have an active study group here??

Ans. Here are the links for all the CAT study groups running on PG. We hope your city is in this list:

Kolkata- http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/cat-an...p-kolkata.html (CAT 2009 Study Group-Kolkata)

Chennai- http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/cat-an...at-2009-a.html (chennai study circle cat 2009)

Hyderabad- http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/cat-an...udy-group.html

Delhi NCR/Gurgaon/Noida- http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/cat-an...p-gurgaon.html (CAT 2009 Study group for Gurgaon/Delhi (NCR))

Q9: How do I prepare for CAT??

Ans.: Believe me; if you are asking this question, you are on the right track. You are aware of the fact that you do need to work a little bit if you need to reach there (!).

BUT, how to prepare for an exam is highly subjective. It is like a shoe. Mine won’t fit you and yours would bite me. There can’t be a standard size shoe that fits everybody. You will have to try on different shoes before you get that perfect size for yourself. There may be hundreds of preparation strategies floating around the forum. And you can only get confused by trying to look at and follow each one of them.

Everyone has their own strategy, and they have developed that by hit and trial. Here are a few very logical suggestions which may help you develop your own preparation strategy.
  • First and the foremost DO NOT spend much (ANY!) time on Vedic math and shortcuts. They were relevant in the times when CAT had 150-180 questions and 120 minutes. These days, you have 150 minutes and 75 questions. (No coaching center would give you this simple, logical suggestion)
  • PLEASE give enough time for strengthening your basic fundae. Ideally 2-4 months are enough for that, depending upon a person’s abilities. In Quant, if you plan to leave a few topics like PnC, TSD and Probability etc. its fine. But please bear in mind, whatever topics you do, you should be thorough with the basics of that. CAT is an “application of fundae” based test and you won’t be able to apply any, unless you know them inside out. CLARITY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN QUANTITY.
  • PRACTICE. There is no substitute for practice. And practice is the ONLY shortcut for cracking CAT. Give yourselves about a month and a half of practice before CAT.
  • DO NOT take the mock cats from June to September as a measure of your competence against others. Rather, take them as benchmarks for yourselves (Remember, you are still just preparing). Just try and cross your marks/percentile in the last mock you took. Analyse every mock that you take, with respect to what is the topic that cost you the most, what section took most of your time, etc.
  • For Verbal, Reading is one of the best ways of preparing (of course point 3 would still hold true here). Reading would help you in (i) Improving your reading speed (RCs); (ii) Bettering your Comprehension (RCs); (iii) It lets you acquaint with various ways of sentence formation (helps in SCs); (iv) You get to know how paragraphs flow (helps in PJs); and (v) gives you a better thing to do than facebooking/orkutting/twittering, during your free time.
  • Please Do Not Assume ‘Reading = Reading Newspapers/Magazines’. It is just a sub-section of reading. It won’t be of MUCH help. You are asked to read these just so you partially fulfill the criterions laid down in Q5. They help you know what going on around you. And that’s where their role ends. Editorials are a great, great way of knowing about things in finer detail and in helping yourselves shape an opinion but editorials won’t be of much help in your grammar. Read Books/novels, anything that interests you, in the beginning (if you are not an avid reader already) and then at a little later stage, you OUGHT to try reading books on varied topics like science, spiritualism, history. Just give it a shot.
  • DI has no possible helplines or guidelines for preparation. It is all up there in your brain. All you need to do here is practice. Practice various types of DI sets that have come in CAT in the past. And keep your mind open while trying DI questions. While practicing, always try and look for solving a particular question using alternative methods. It really jogs your brain.
  • Keep Viisiting PaGaLGuY.Com

Well Guys, these were just about all the questions i could think of, but i am sure we have a hell lot of innovators amongst you who are capable of questions no one can ever think of!!

So Start Shooting and i'll be more than happy to answer you!!

P.S. Please only ask questions which have not been answered already. Repeat questions won't be entertained

hey could you give an ideal preparation time for various people, like people from science, commerce and arts background?, and is there a relation between iq scores and cat scores?

Hey..!! Amit (?)
Well, there really is no 'ideal preparation time' for any one. It really depends only on how quickly you grasp the concepts that come your way, how much time do you have on your hand to give to preparation and how dedicatedly you practice.
For eg. You may start 3 years before you take the CAT and study just 15 minutes everyday or may start 2 month before and study for 8-9 hrs per day. You get the drift??
Also, because there is no specific SYLLABUS for CAT, it really is quite subjective as to how much 'mathematics' one covers. Similarly, different people need to study for VA differently according to their need, which may increse or decrease the preparation time accordingly.

And to answer your other query, to-date, there has been no documented correlation between one's IQ level and CAT scores.

Umm... Nopes. There is nothing/no one that would tell you how much time you need to prepare. . The earlier, the better...!

Re: CAT Query Center- FAQs regarding CAT 2009 online and other Exams - 23-06-2009, 02:28 PM

hi aditya,
firstly, thanx a ton for this great initiative...! wud be great if you can help me out with my predicament!! need ur unbiased opinion...!

my profile is as follows:

X - 83%(ICSE)
XII - 81%(ISCE)
B.E. - 63% (VTU, Belgaum, 2004)
work-ex - 4+ years (IT) with a leading MNC.

with this profile & decent extracurriculars(regular on the quizzing circuit at both the corporate & college level, couple of papers co-authored) will it go against me in getting a call from the top-tier bschools in india? i have raked up decent percentiles in my previous attempts (91%, 97% & 95%)...but have not been able to make the cut as regards the top bschools!! now with a 4+ years usual IT work-ex & 28 years of age....am pretty confused about the whole selection process in indian bschools. applying to foreign bschools is not really an option coz of the financial constraints!! am planning to quit in another month...work for an NGO & give CAT & the other exams one last try!!
i would like to know from you ..if this profile will get me very far as regards the top-tier schools are concerned. looking forward to hearing from you !!

thanx

XII - 81%(ISCE)
B.E. - 63% (VTU, Belgaum, 2004)
work-ex - 4+ years (IT) with a leading MNC.

with this profile & decent extracurriculars(regular on the quizzing circuit at both the corporate & college level, couple of papers co-authored) will it go against me in getting a call from the top-tier bschools in india? i have raked up decent percentiles in my previous attempts (91%, 97% & 95%)...but have not been able to make the cut as regards the top bschools!! now with a 4+ years usual IT work-ex & 28 years of age....am pretty confused about the whole selection process in indian bschools. applying to foreign bschools is not really an option coz of the financial constraints!! am planning to quit in another month...work for an NGO & give CAT & the other exams one last try!!
i would like to know from you ..if this profile will get me very far as regards the top-tier schools are concerned. looking forward to hearing from you !!

thanx
Hey Nemo, what i could see from the profile you gave is that you have no problem what so ever in the extra curriculars and grad/school scores. Its the CAT percentiles where you are faltering.

If you'd want a call from a top tier B School (IIMs, SPJ), you will, in ANY case, need to get a more than decent percentile (98.5+). In XAT, you might still get yourself a PMIR call with a 97 percentile and a good VA percentile, but in CAT, you will have to improve the percentile.

P.S. I am unaware if you will be paid at the NGO or not, but in case you wont be, i would actually advise you against leaving your job!! (except incase you have a backup plan for just in case a top tier B School doesnt happen this year too)

Happy Preparation!

Best of Luck!!

Re: CAT Query Center- FAQs regarding CAT 2009 online and other Exams - 23-06-2009, 11:31 PM

I am actually gonna take up CAT for the third time this year....both the previous occasions i messed up quants royally...last time got a 99 in verbal and 98 in logic...but got a score in quant which is quite undisclosable....I have realized half the problem with quant is in my mind....this year have been working hard to improve my confidence in Quant....got Arun Sharma and have finished the first block....but after solving the questions there...and trying to solve questions posted in QQAD,Number System, official Quant Thread 09 i find i am still struggling....also i have TIME material with me....apart from mastering the concepts and fundas....practice in which kinda problems will help me increase my confidence level in Quant....Should I be first solving the TIME material and problems in Arun Sharma..and then move on to higher difficulty problems?...friends plz help me...what should be my approach here on?
