Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Hello everybody,

A final year engineering student here who got placed in TCS today

Was all happy until i heard of this pre medical test..

I have had a couple of operations till now,and have very weak legs..can walk without support, but mobility pretty limited and limp a lot while walking..physically disabled officially with quite a high percentage of disability on the certificate..

Now, am i in the danger of being eliminated during the checkup? I'm really scared now...dunno waht to do..had a neurological condition before, which is quite fine now...but the medical records speak quite negatively, which i'm sure i'll have to provide for the test!!

Really really worried...pls reply..

I work for Oracle and I have a few colleagues who have a condition in the same light as you have.
Your IT skills shall be tested. You don,t have to prove the physical strength there.

Also if they do discriminate based on your condition, raise an alarm let the world know!!

Hi all,

I am new to this. I don't know how can one post queries here! What's this all about posts, forums, etc? I still haven't got a picture of what's happening. Do we not have the authority to post our concern or information up here?

I need a reply and I may then start functioning properly. Also, excessive pictures, texts, links and quotes here and there are making things extremely confusing.

Kindly don't think that I am complaining. Just curious.

Hi all ,
I have been meaning to ask this question fro long, I quit my job after 10 months because i do not see myself as a job kinda person , i always had that entrepreneurial streak in me, though i guess that due to lack of courage i have not yet started it. I planned on going for MS and than subsequently dropped the idea and than appeared for CAT and FMS, now it has been 8 months and i have been sitting idle and doing nothing, I do not want to look for another job because i do not want to do it , so how do i explain me going for an MBA and how to justify the year long break from work?

I don't follow this thread closely. But from the topic this does not seem the relevant thread for this question. Anyways I leave it to the mods. I will instead try to answer your question.

Tell them the truth. Anything can sound great if you know to gloss it well. You can make a nice story of how you realized you were just following the beaten path and wanted to stop and introspect about your true goals in life and then how you discovered whatever that was and how MBA is an integral part of achieving that goal. It all depends on how you carry it through. If you give an impression of a matured person really taking a conscious decision to stop and organize his life, I think it can fly in most cases.

that is what i want to say , but often misguided by ppl , who dont like to take the offbeat path. I know what I am doing and why I am doing but will the ppl at the interview believe it if I say so ?
I dont think getting in matters a lot to me but i am going to stick to my story, just wanted to know how to put it across without been overconfident or arrogant.

It should come from the heart. You can look them in the eye and say calmly and with confidence and a clear logic to your decision.

You should appear matured and in control. You should not appear apologetic and lost.

i too have a 5 months gap and unable to find a job in the current scenario.. what shud i do??
plz need guidence.. my ultimate aim is mba from top b school...

hi guys,

I am 23 years old. I have attempted for CAT twice (both half heartedly), and got a very poor score (as expected!).

Although during the two years, i didnt drop , I persued Masters in the meantime.

Now I have started a venture of mine, i am funding that on my own (No VC!).
I am doing this by working as a part time faculty at one coaching institution(regd.)

At this point i have two queries basically:-
Should I forget about MBA, and focus just on my venture (i see less growth ever since i started). My havnt reached the break even point yet.
Should i try one last time, as i strongly believe that with dedication I can at least land up in a top 20 B-School. Ive spoken to people from coveted B-Schools. Their suggestion is to go for an MBA, as it would hone my skills and give me an edge in running my business.

Now there are some hurdles too:-
If I choose option 2 (i.e. il prepare for MBA alongside running my start-up) will I be able to justify myself, as i dont have any work-ex.
Let's say i enter into a coveted B-School(if only hurdle 1 is answered !), I would have a nice placement offer in front of me. That would deviate me from the path leading to my desire to be an entrepreneur.

I would appreciate valuable inputs from fellow puys.

Regards
Vignesh

i would appreciate valuable inputs

cheers!

So, you wanted to be an entrepreneur...so be it then ... to be entrepreneur you just need guts ... not MBA ...trust me my friend .

Look at big big entrepreneurs around you ...you will realize that . why there is less chance of MBA's becoming entrepreneurs ? well, first of all , you take a huge study loan for the study...and then you start paying EMI's later on ...and then you find all dreams vanished... Entrepreneur's are owners and MBA's are workers...its just like that....no, I am not demoralizing you ...I'm just saying the hard true fact in the industry . I am working in the industry for so many years...and I got experience. You know you need to justify yourself why you want to go for MBA ? whats your long term goal ?And also, there are so many MBA's are floating in the market to get a job . Not everybody can become a good manager . ..If you are looking for a job , then yes you can go for it . The degree can help you to get a job . but this won't guarantee you to be a owner of the firm .
Hi All,
I have observed that lots of threads get started with topics like "help me" ,"please advise" etc etc and clutter up the forum.
So i thought why not put up a thread where PGites can post their queries about their career and CAT dilemmas, advise and et al.
For starters,i have identified lots of threads like it.Am pasting the links here,it will be great if Mods can merge these threads with this one and let this thread act as an repository.
So guys post your queries and I am sure one or other senior PGites will respond.

Some of the links are:

Will add more links as and when i find.

Just one request, please do not put your queries on information about any B-School here or any particular institute.

Hello all,

Its great to notice this new and useful forum.
I would appreciate all expert members of this group to offer some valuable guidance to me:
would like to introduce myself as a B.Tech graduate in I.T with over four years of experience working in an engineering firm , in an IT services support role.

I manage issues pertaining to IT systems , IT security,Networking and I.T infrastructure.

I am now looking to make a career shift into the I.T industry and have identified certain areas of interest:

a. Software Testing
b.Cloud Computing
c. Database administration
d. IT infrastructure management(ITIL)
e. IT security (CompTia Strata)
f. Data centre management

I am unsure as to what sort of IT certification would be necessary for getting a sue shot break into any of these fields.

I would request help from all experienced members with their valuable suggestions on suitable qualifications that would aid me in achieving the career shift( not an MBA,for now)

Thanks.

Hi Guys

I was wondering if any of you could help me out a little. My background information is:

I was born in India and lived there till the age of 11
Moved to London and have been living here for the past 10 years
Got straight A's in A levels (equivalent to 12th standard)
Currently in my second year at the University of Nottingham studying BSc Economics and should average around 65%.
I don't want to work in London and want to move to India.

Now is that a sensible choice? I really don't like living here and feel I may be able to succeed more in India. I do have relatives in India, including Delhi so living and all that is not a problem. Would ANYONE take me on just with a bachelors degree? If not is it worthwhile doing a Masters in Finance in London and then going to India, or does a Masters count for jack all and would be more worthwhile pursuing an MBA in india?

Please advise!

Thanks

Following are the certification
Software Testing ISQTB
b.Cloud Computing No Idea
c. Database administration Depends which track u opt like Developer Track or DBA Track

Again which Database like Db2 ,Oracle,Sql Server,Sybase First choose Database and then go for certification like OCA/OCP

d. IT infrastructure management(ITIL) ITIL Fundamental u can do this from Vyom Labs

e. IT security (CompTia Strata) No Idea will let u know once found

f. Data centre management I thik it is related with Data Centre of Bank .There is no certification for this as faras i know

I am Oracle DBA.need any help PM me

Hi guys,

I completed my B.Com (Hons) last year from Delhi University. My scores a re as follows:-

X- 90%
XII- 87%
Graduation-70%

Except for this iI cant boast of anything in my profile except for certain competitions within the school won in painting and recommendation lettters from the Cancer Aid Society.

Now I dropped a year to prepare for the entrances and have one more go at the exams...my scores for both the seasons are as folloes-

2008 2009

CAT- 84%ile CAT-?
XAT- 98.1%ile XAT-?
SNAP- score-55 SNAP-score-90
FMS-78%ile FMS-?
IIFT- score-20 IIFT-score-33

Now both the years I gave the exams without any prep the reasons for which are nothing that im proud off. I know that with serious work put in I can clear some of these exams.....but am in a dilemma as to should i take up a job and try one more year or join any college which I get this time??

Please help me as Im totally clueless....moreover people have also told me that the stigma of a being a graduate from a lesser know college throughout your life while my dad is of the opinion that if you are good in the private sector then the college is a mere name? How true is that.

Although id personally like to go to a very good college bvut this year the chances are very bleak. Pls sme1 help me out...id be grateful.

Though at the end the call is all yours but I can certainly give certain inputs

1.College does matter. You can reach up there even if you are not from a great insti but it means lotts of extra effort. On the other hand a good b school ensures a good entry point in the industry. After that everyone is on their own.

2.you graduated last year only. And also your scores are decent enough. If you work hard enough then there is no reason that you wont be able get into the best colleges of the country.Get a job and give your best this time. But its very easy to waste time and not study. So make sure that you are ready to work hard and not waste time.Believe me very few people have the ability to slog it out for such a long time.So be mentally prepared for the hard work.

3.be realistic about your abilities and your goals. There is no right and wrong in such cases. If you think you are capable of getting into a good college then certainly go for it.Weigh all the pros and cons and then take a decision. And whatever people say hard work and determination always pay.

My friend is final year BSC 3rd yr .. got selected in wipro through campus placement..they are sponsoring for an MS from bits pilani ..she'll have to work for them as well and get a stipend during the 4 year course cum work period..and after that if she leave wipro i'l retain that MS degree...what should be the decision in this case?

will the MS degree be of any use after one decides to shift after the 4 yrs??

Whats the catch (If any?? )

Only catch is you have to stick to the company for that much period time.
Get it cleared that if you leave or switch in between then what ?
Well if your friend can stick for that long then its always better to pursue and get some degree rather than just doing job. I know many guys who completed their MS from BITS, Pilani while working in companies such as Infosys, Huawei etc.. but how come this course is of 4 years.. wondering..
