I don't want to work in London and want to move to India.
would be more worthwhile pursuing an MBA in india?

Yes, of course you can work wonders with a bachelors degree. Degree is not everything. Well sensibility of choice depends on what you want in future...More money ? then of course London is the best place :p
But you feel you can progress more here, you can always come. You are from Fin background where mostly now companies are preferring an MBA here in India.. so you can try searching jobs online in India and give telephonic interviews.. Coming after Masters also would also be fine...
Guess you can also think of doing MBA from London and then come here to work if you really dont have any money and ROI constraints.

Hi Hector....

Need some advice...I'm an engineering student..currently in my final yr of graduation...I wish to foray into the Finance domain after my MBA...and since i understand that my engg background notwithstanding...i would still have to convince the recruiters as to why am i leaving the engg field and taking a plunge into the Fin domain...for an answer to this...i appeared for and cleared the first level of CFA...now should i go for the next level...what i mean to ask is...isn't the first level sufficient to prove my competency in the Finance Dom...Given that i have an engg background..

please reply

thanks in advance,,

Well clearing CFA shows your strong penchant towards Fin domain, however recruiters in India may be reluctant to take you as you are from Engg background.
Had this been a case, why most of the guys go for an MBA to get into Fin domain... they can just do CFA and join Fin sector.. Hope am clear
As you have cleared CFA-1...you can do 1 thing.. prepare your cv and try applying to all fin companies for around 1 month.. If it worked, Best !! otherwise would suggest you to do an MBA and yes if you get time, go for CFA-2 as well because CFA-1 is very common these days among fin guys so CFA-2 would definitely act as a catapult !!

Hi,

I just finished my Engg. and I am currently working in a PSU...I am planning to do my MBA in 2011 or 2012...In the meantime I want to do some finance program(correspondence)...I want to move from Engg to finance and currently my profile is in Commercial side. Please suggest some good finance courses which I could do...

Thanks

So, you wanted to be an entrepreneur...so be it then ... to be entrepreneur you just need guts ... not MBA ...trust me my friend .

Look at big big entrepreneurs around you ...you will realize that . why there is less chance of MBA's becoming entrepreneurs ? well, first of all , you take a huge study loan for the study...and then you start paying EMI's later on ...and then you find all dreams vanished... Entrepreneur's are owners and MBA's are workers...its just like that....no, I am not demoralizing you ...I'm just saying the hard true fact in the industry . I am working in the industry for so many years...and I got experience. You know you need to justify yourself why you want to go for MBA ? whats your long term goal ?And also, there are so many MBA's are floating in the market to get a job . Not everybody can become a good manager . ..If you are looking for a job , then yes you can go for it . The degree can help you to get a job . but this won't guarantee you to be a owner of the firm .

i agree 100%
but many poeple say, A b-School not only gets u a good offer, but also instills in you the spirit of managing anything in ,life.

Il take the example of IMS learning resourses CEO. He's an IIM product. He's now successfully running an enterprise ritefully the best in its class.

I am skeptical about the fact that, if i start a venture now (without an MBA)
i would have no other option than to just go out there and sweat it out. Also the chance of failure is very high.

On the other hand, doing an MBA from a good B-School, would give an exellent pay packet, and i would have an option then to persue my dream (to be an entrepreneur)

I am in a solid dilema!

guidance required!

Try marketing research or Sales jobs.

The best b schools are of course the IIMs, SP Jain, XLRI, Sp Jain etc. etc. - the usual stuff. If your focussed on advertising side maybe MICA. You can probably give NITIE and IITs the skip.

Well.. guess you are on right track !! Many ppl do double MBA.. first here and the second one abroad !! Its one of the best options :cheerio:

Coming to your second ques. When they ask for work-ex its FULL TIME work ex.. not the time you have gained an MBA or have pursued part time work.. Yes ! you can always update and reflect that in your other sections but not in work-ex !!

Hi PGians,

I am an MBA working in an IT Firm from past 1.5 years as an executive manager in planning division. I am currently involved in new products development and formulation of marketing strategies.

Please advise some courses/certifications/executive programs to hone my skills. Am also interested in MarCom and Consumer Behavior. Would prefer courses from the Best in the league and possibly from abroad.

Shall be grateful to have valuable suggestions.

I have done b.tech(2006) and m.tech( 2008 ) in CSE and now planning and aiming to do MBA from IVY league college in US or from IIMs in india(trying for 2011-2013 batch). Since aug 08 i m working with IBM as associate system engineer with CTC 3.4L, but offlet I am tempted to switch to some other company like accenture ,adobe etc as they are offering atleast 5.5 -6L CTC. I m confused whether going to some other company at this time would be a wise decision as some people have told me that from MBA perspective it will not look good on my resume as I have worked only for 1 year 5 months in this company. Seniors Plz suggest. (will it make any difference ?)

Dear all,

I am mechanical engineer from the 2008 batch, currently working in the offshore oil & gas industry with a top multinational conglomerate. having started with a purely technical profile i took up project management responsibilities as well. this shift was due to my inclination towards management and business discourse. now i am convinced that the extent of management work here isnt sufficient to satisfy my appetite for the same.

I wish to move to a management consultancy firm as an analyst or associate consultant. I need you guys to advise me on the feasibilty of shifting and further, the means by which i can achieve this.

applying randomly to top management consultants hasnt been fruitful. kindly advise.

Hi Sohail,

I don't think so that the switch would hamper your chances of MBA by any way. Go ahead and switch to a job which helps you move ahead faster.

All the Best!!!

Need some help
I completed my B-Tech in May 2009 and due to the recession I could not bag a job. Since then I started preparing for CAT. I want to know would my not working anywhere for the past 7-8months ruin my chances of getting admission in a good B-school?? Plz help!

Hi,

I believe, this is the best time to go for your MBA. No point in chasing wild goose. by the time you will enroll for your MBA course, you will have adequate work experience. You can earn money later. this I believe is the time to sharpen your edges with an MBA degree, provided that you want to assume the managerial role and have some skills already developed.

Working can never hamper your chances of getting into an MBA college. Just make sure that you focus more on your preparation then trying to earn quick money.

Wish ya luck...

@hector

friend my next query.....as you know that i am a mechanical engineer how to get a summer placement in investment banking, consulting firms if i happen to get into i.e.BIM,IFMR.....what are all the steps should i take from now on and what do they expect during summer placement????......and i am quite clear to enter only finance domain...no marketing,hr 😃

You may have to answer this question in your interview : Why you switched ? Why so early..
If you have a genuine answer nobody can stop you..
One more thing for some B-Schools apart from the work you do, the brand also matters. IBM is a big brand for US Schools. You can always say i switched for better opportunities and work/exposure..more learning etc.
Swicth always affects preparation ..so keep this in mind.. otherwise there is not much problem.. Looks I confused you more 😛 You need to thoroughly weight and decide your options..
