Re: IIFT 2009 Final Results out - 06-05-2009, 12:53 PM

I personally feel good to have worked too the past 18 months. Coz i came to know a lot of things that i never knew as a fresher. One was regarding my knowledge in my subject and the most important was my skill of dealing with people. I worked(still working) in a chemical factory and there i never got the hi-fi life i dreamed. I dealt with people who're having little or no education but still masters in their craft. I feel its more difficult to deal with such people than with educated people. No offence to them, if they had better conditions when they grew up then am sure they'd have had a better career than me. I was more in the role of a facilitator, a sort of bridge between the top management which didn't deal with these workers directly, but used engineers like me to get the job done. I had lot of tough days, days when i thought why i chose this job instead of the software job i had got in Wipro. Each day i lamented about my decision to come here when some crisis happened in the factory. But then this enabled me to deal with crisis, one after the other over the past year i've learnt how to deal with problems that crop up without any notice. I feel the job has helped me know myself better. I feel more confident taking decisions.

Back in my college days the only such experience i had was when i was coordinator for my college's fest. That's the maximum exposure a small town guy like me could get in his college days. Those days i used to deal with people who're like minded, who're educated like me, who're having the same ideology; and i dealt with a few lakhs of rupees and that was a BIG thing for me back then. In my job i dealt with people who never got any extra incentive for doing a job in the night shift, and it was very very tough motivating them. In their eyes i was someone who earned a lot more than they ever will, just cause i did a few more years in college or school, when they were out earning a living. I dealt with equipment worth crores of rupees. I used to make purchases of machinery worth millions of dollars. I signed bills worth lakhs. I was 1st perturbed by the idea of people my dad's age or more calling me SIR. But i slowly gained their respect and they used to discuss with me more than just their factory problems. I became the young-guy-who-helps. I was invited to each and everyone of their functions, weddings, kids' birthdays and what not. But then I had a nagging boss who made me wanna quit this job each day. Even today while coming for lunch I was asked when i will be going by 4 men. They all had a sadness in their eyes when they spoke to me and had a pride in their face when they said "We'll tell the next batch that comes in that someone went for MBA from this office". I feel good about this fact. I feel good that i worked.

My friends in IIM's and other top colleges who got in the 1st time i wrote CAT were telling me how wrong they were to have entered without job-ex. Some of them struggled to get GREAT JOBS inspite of having excellent acad's(i mean 90+ all thru career), awesome extra currics and sports. I didn't say they didn't get jobs. They did get, but they never get the kind of DREAM jobs we hear about in the papers. So i feel good that i didn't get through any tests in my 1st and 2nd attempts and that i made it to IIFT this year. I hope to have a great 2 years ahead of me with batchmates like you.

Looking forward to it.

PS: This post isn't meant to counter anyone's stand or to demoralise anyone. But i thought i should say this out here.

Thanks for the great post mexxian! You seem to be much wiser and have seen a lot more than your age reflects!

Folks, I am not trying to offend anyone here with my posts, and I hope people take all I say in the right spirit, as I am looking forward to spending a great 2 years with all of you learning from you, as well as hoping to impart something to you. I don't carry any chip on my shoulder about anything: work ex, age or whatever else!

There is a reason why I love this country - there is freedom to do what you want, and don't let me or anyone else dictate terms on how to live your life or anything else. If you are a fresher and you want to do an MBA - GO FOR IT! If you are a grandpa with 40 years of experience and you want to do an MBA - GO FOR IT! You will never know your true potential until you get out there and do something. As long as you are settled in your mind that you should do an MBA, then who am I or anyone else to discourage you from it. The world always has its naysayers, but the world belongs to them, as it rightfully should, who swept aside the naysayers, to forge their own path! Carry your torch and hold it high so that the path is lighted up for those who follow, but for heaven's sake, don't make your torch a yo-yo to confuse them I have met 18 years olds who are more mature than 80 year olds and 80 year olds with more energy and drive than 18 year olds. So don't let your work ex or the lack thereof stand in your way of achieving your goal, as long as you know what your goal is and can articulate it even if someone comes and wakes you up at 3am!!!!!

Re: IIFT 2009 Final Results out - 06-05-2009, 04:07 PM

I have got a few questions for the seniors in Delhi. Please take out some time to answer these. I am sorry if these questions are asked already in the earlier posts but I did not come across.

1) Are there any washing machines available in the hostels? If not, any washerman or laundry house in the vicinity?

2) I have heard that few rooms are a little icky. Is that true? I have heard that rooms are allotted roll number wise. Does that mean that people who are last roll number wise will get the top floor.

3) Attire - Is there any specific attire that is necessary right from the first day? Or can we purchase the blazer\suit after we join depending on the rules. I am not used to wearing a formal attire at my work place for so many years now. Feels very odd.

4) Mess - Is the food at mess good or do you all fall back upon any eating joing nearby very often?

5) Can we join the hostel a few days before July 1st or would the rooms be opened only on July 1st for the new batch. Good if we can join at least a couple of days earlier to get a hang of the place around before we are grilled by the Profs and do not have time left for anything in life.

6) Do we have any preparatory classes or are we straight away thrown into an unknown world of accounts, statistics etc? Are there any books or subjects that we can go through before coming there as it has been more than 6 years since I touched anything related to accounts?

Sorry for so many questions. But am going to stay in a hostel for the first time in my life so do not wnat to be caught unawares.

Thanks
~Vamsi

@vamsinanduri & other puys

Just a courtesy note: The many questions is not an annoying part, but the fact that the questions have been answered already. I know this because I am not a senior, but I did my homework, i.e., did some research on the forums. Of course, not everyone has broadband, so my apologies if I came across as a bit grumpy No offense meant!

1. No washing machines. Dhobhi to wash and iron at Rs.4 per article
2.All rooms same. Please see earlier posts. Yep, roll no wise. Last roll no gets last room available
3. Navy blue blazer and steel grey trousers. You need them from day 1.
4. Mess food is hygienic compared to offerings outside. Non veg is same price.
5. Based on last years thread, the IIFT blog, it seems you can show up a couple of days earlier.
6. You can read books if you like, but I would recommending chilling for now as all of us will be in the same boat. Based on earlier posts, we will have ample time to hit the books at IIFT till we get sick so this is a good time to just chill
