Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Buddy,

1. There are good number of people from IT industry which go for MBA every year ... so, going for an IT job despite won't hinder your chances to pursue MBA next year ... Similarly, people from core domains also come for MBA . In short, the work domain does not matter when it comes to cracking CAT or any other MBA entrance, it's all about your determination to work for cracking exam and time management along with the job.

2. Being from non IT background won't hinder your career growth in IT industry... reason being that IT industry is like a sea which has people from almost every possible engineering branch as its part .. and after a stipulated training period in almost every company, all the employees are at same level from company's point of view ... here comes the stage when people start differentiating themselves from crowd on the basis of performance.

For example, my project manager in company was from Mechanical Background and he had a lot of exposure to various technologies/tools and is quite successful in one of the leading IT companies... so, growth rate in IT industry is independent of domain, what matters is your performance, willingness to keep learning new technologies/tools , understanding logic behind everything happening and the potential to perform good and well within time.

Hope this helps
Varun

Buddy,

1. Entry level packages are almost same for all IT majors like TCS , Infosys , Wipro etc ... might be a variation of 1-2k here and there... entry level packages do not depend on your background, rather they depend on college you are coming from ( they basically categorize colleges in different levels and generally keep compensations accordingly ) but the difference is not too high and you can easily make up for it by performing well.

2. What we call 'marketing' is popularly known as ' business development' in IT industry... they basically hire MBAs for this or give this role to people who have had good experience in IT industry .... as a fresh engineer, most likely roles include coding, testing etc... however, there are few people who get into functional side of projects ( as per company requirements) and have a life in which there is almost no coding πŸ˜ƒ

For eg: i was trained to do coding during my initial days in infy but later on i was moved to SAP-MDM consultancy where there was no coding involved πŸ˜ƒ

At the end of the day , your role will be more of a coder initially but might vary as per company requirements ... but, few years down the line in IT, you can switch to functional side as per your interest.

Cheers

4 Year gap is a big time. I hope you have at least one valid reason to justify it. And I hope you werent sitting entirely idle during the time. It would have been better if you had done some course/part-time job/NGO work/etc during the 4 years.

Nevertheless, if you can justify your gap, you can still manage to get into a good Bschool. Note- I believe justifying a 4 year gap is extremely difficult unless you had some sort of a serious problem.

For any Bschool, you will need to justify your gap during the interview. If you are prepared with your answer, and if you can convince your interviewers that you do have the passion and desire to become a Manager, I believe you can make it.

Profile is okay. Apart from some institutes like IIM-B, IIM-S, etc you may get calls. As for SP Jain, it seems difficult, unless you have decent achievements in extra-curriculars,sports, etc.

Prepare hard for CAT 2011 first. Dont get bogged down by the past, if you dont perform well in the written exam, you wont get a call in the first place. So buck up, have faith in yourself, and start working hard. Atb. πŸ˜ƒ

Here I assume that ur dad is having a business in India.
I would suggest to go for SP Jain. The reason behind:
1. It is a course which concentrates on family business which is your need. 2. It will give you an opportunity to understand the Indian business scenario in particular which will not be so obvious in UK.
3. Cheaper than Wales (not imp although )

Hello everybody, I am Rohan Gupta from Jabalpur,Madhya Pradesh.I am doing B.E. in Electrical and Electronics from Hitkarni College of Engineering and Technology, Jabalpur and I am in 3rd semester now.I have GATE,GRE & CAT as my options for Masters degree so I want to do coaching for CAT so my GRE preparation will go side by side as there is not much difference in the syllabus(please correct me if I am wrong).I will prepare for GATE on my own.

I have some queries which I am posting below.....

1. T.I.M.E., I.M.S.,PT Education and Career Launcher are the top MBA coaching centers in my city.Which coaching center to join? Which one has the best study material?

2. I am in 3rd semester and have to give CAT and all other exams in 7th semester. So, what's the best time/Sem to join a coaching?

3. I am currently reading Norman-Lewis.After finishing it I will go for Rein & Martin while practicing Vedic Maths side by side.Any correction required in my plan? Best strategy for me to follow? Any books to prefer other than these?

If there are any active threads running on my queries then please provide me links.Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance and have a great day:).

Hi,

Following threads should help you πŸ˜ƒ http://www.pagalguy.com/discussions/2010-2011-cat-coaching-classes-queries-25054329 and http://www.pagalguy.com/discussions/books-for-cat-preparation-25010537.

Also, material of all coachings is on similar lines though i would suggest you to go for either TIME or CL material.

There is no time which can be called best to join coaching... still, time when you think that you will be able to study and do follow ups for what is being taught in coaching, spend time to practice the topics being taught is the best time to join... depends more on your schedule. Remember one thing that only advantage of joining any coaching is that it brings regularity in your sittings for preparation πŸ˜ƒ so, all depends upon the time you can afford to give it after joining.... so, decide accordingly :)

All the best

too early days buddy ! i guess u have high aspiration at this point of time πŸ˜ƒ but at the same time,u cant take anything and everything available !

see what suits u .. if its gre - jus prep for it .. if its gate - jus prep whole heartedly for it .. same is case with cat !

one man --> one arrow --> three targets .. doesnt that look strange ?

i am not discouraging your spirit but all three have diff roles in career ..

in mathematical terms , GATE intersection CAT intersection GRE is NULL set

ofcourse u can say verbal can help but gre verbal is brutal mugging up of words but cat is more of reasoning verbal ..

give some time to make the decision which suits u and then work on it and u have specialist for all three exams here .. get hold of them and obtain their help !

good luck !

Thanks for your reply.Actually it is like if not this then this.I have interest in both Engineering and MBA.As per my knowledge CAT, GRE, GMAT have same syllabus with little difference in English(Please correct me if I am wrong). So, one arrow and three targets covered:).I am not specially preparing for GATE but it is also an available option for me so I am considering it too.I will give GATE on the basis of what I remember till last semester:D.

I guess you should focus on supply chain mngmt. If you are restricted to choose from the 2 of them, then in my opinion Full time MBA will be more helpful. Though, I guess the maximum benefit you can get from any of the management schools of IITs or NITIE.

if ur passionate about technical go for gate or MS (if u get an admit in 1 of these)...
for the time being u can join infy or mu-sigma (depending on what profile nd pkg & location & if they have any bond) ..
in case u get an admit for MBA this year as well, take ur call....

Dude you're way too confused. Analyst Job, Core Job,PSU Job, Gate,GRE,MBA, whoa. you've everything on your plate.

You first need to make some priorities in life. Decide on one. Either MBA or technical. Either Pvt or Public sector in job.
Nobody else can tell you what to do in life. It's you who needs to decide.

Having worked in both infy and mu-sigma, I can say that both are completely different organization. Which one to join solely depends on which sector you want to be and what are your expectations from job.

Talk to lot of people and your college seniors. Look at kind of work. If you focus on 10 things you won't be able to excel in even one.

Best of Luck

PS- this thread might be of some help to you-

Puys.. I am currently pursuing bachelors of business economics from the University of Delhi.. 79.5% till date(2nd yr)..

I have two job offers at hand.. one is a profile of a research associate at an mnc, which employs 4500+ ppl.. salary in-hand of around 30k per month.. though the designation is that of a research associate, the work involves mere data entry, surfing the net, googling info, etc etc..

The other offer is from a start up(just an yr old) financial advisory firm, which has an employee base of just around 7-8 ppl + 6 of us expected to join by june.. the profile is that of a business development executive.. my work will be to market customised portfolios and also track clients for the same.. salary will be around 17k per month, plus the incentives

As of now, I am confused about what specialisation to choose for my mba- marketing or finance.. Economics is my fav subject, but MA eco is certainly out of the picture..

Seniors, plz suggest me what to do.. which offer to choose.. I dont really care about the monetary aspects, because as of now I am just looking for some quality experience..
